I'd be curious to know how many of those overdoses involved people who:
a) were prescribed opiates/opioids due to chronic pain but have had their meds cut back or cut off by Doctors?
b) were refused or don't have the ability to pay for alternative means to address chronic pain?

In today's World there is a new way to address chronic pain and it's from a plant. Oregon and Washington State are chock-a-bloc full of medicial mj sites, as ubiquituous as gas stations. They're everywhere.

It's the crisis of ODing on opioids that is killing our people today, here is yet another angle on the subject:

More than 1,100 British Columbians have died due to suspected illicit drug overdoses, according to data released today by the BC Coroners Service.

Preliminary data indicate there were 80 suspected drug overdose deaths this September, representing a 31 per cent increase from September 2016. The suspected number of illicit drug overdose deaths for the year to date is now 1,103, up from 607 at this time in 2016.

Approximately 83 per cent (914) of the suspected illicit drug deaths to date in 2017 had fentanyl detected, representing an increase of 147 per cent over the same period in 2016.

In most cases, fentanyl was combined with other illicit drugs, most often cocaine, heroin or methamphetamines.

Carfentanil has been detected in 37 suspected illicit drug overdose deaths between June and September of 2017

It's like there's a massacre out there but no single perpertrator.

It's sad that there are so many self-righteous and intolerant people who think that these deaths are deserved because of "lifestyle and choices". Kinda reminiscent of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980's, where people were actually happy that the gay people were dying.

Our society is still so entrenched in such out-dated religious intolerance... still looking down our noses at people who don't fit in, that we'd rather see them die. What would be so bad to provide them with safe alternatives rather than condemn them?

"1,103, up from 607" = 1,710 people, usually between 18-59 yrs/old.

If a gunman opened fire and killed this many at once, 1,710, we'd have something solid to blame.
But drug ods and addiction on this massive scale throughtout the Province?

The addiction statistics are nothing new. They're just becoming apparent now because people are dying and therefore making the news. 1,710 people represents about 0.03% of B.C.'s population, so most people aren't directly affected by it. But they watch the news and get outraged and decide that the "druggies" are bringing down society somehow. We're a sad society of hypocrites.

It's not just kinda reminiscent, it's exactly the same. So many people have openly expressed delight that drug addicts are dying and also expressed that the addicts deserve bad things to happen to them.

People really need to be educated about how prevalent addiction is.

One person doesn't equal an entire segment of society. Please learn more about how prevalent addiction is.

This would be something that someone at least remotely interested in knowing or understanding the truth would try and undertake. I have yet to see such an interest (knowing or understanding truth) demonstrated by this poster, as opposed to his continual and repeated regurgitation of out-dated and erroneous stereotype and right-wing rhetoric. Kinda sad actually
