IMF reports inflation exlected to hit 1 million percent. By years end .

New currency released last week. Shops are mostly closed as no one knew what the notes were going to be worth.

Venezuelans live off pennies a week.

Border areas of Brazil are over run with refugees. The Brazillians throw stones and burn the refugee camps.
Government of Brazil has started shipping them further into the country. For safety reasons .

A vote for the NDP is similar to supporting the policies of Maduro. Let us not forget Venezuela has oil equal or greater than Saudi Arabia.

Venezuela’s current condition is a result of a slowly disintegrating autocratic government.

Hopefully for the sake of the people livin there the situation can be sorted to alleviate suffering.

That will be the end of the regime. This is the last cash cow.
RIP socialist Venezuela. Remember it was only 10 years ago Hugo Chavez stood at the UN called Bush Jr Satan. A lot changed in 10 years.

I heard something on the news today saying that neighbouring countries (Peru?) was now in the process of shutting down their borders to the economic migrants running from Venezuela.

This issue wasn't on my radar until today

It sounds absolutely hellish. Akin to Germany of 1920's when wheelbarrows of cash couldn't buy a loaf of bread?

Will be investigating how this happened.

Added later:

Ok, just read through your first link Jflem, and must agree that it is a good place to start learning. What a fiasco. A politician (dictator, imo) who used his government's military to enforce his own ideas, coupled with oil price slump making it impossible to support his "vision", and just for added misery, political interference from other countries.

It's a vicious combination of social policies, unbridled expenditures and world oil prices. The fallout can only be social upheaval with the ugly face of social unrest, fleeing migrants, hoodlums and gangs and graft. Deadly.

Is there a lesson here?

Venezuela is fighting the forced sale of Citgo. Canadian miner Crystallex is owed 1.4 Billion dollars. Citgo is owned by Venezuela. This is the last cash cow.

Just like the Red Sox. See it go. Citgo.
The government of Venezuela appears to be a bad actor in many regards.

Today i believe the sale of Citgo was postponed. The government of Venezuela apparently has all kinds of money to spend on legal teams in USA. Just no money to feed her citizens

Yes. Never believe what you read in the Tyee...at least what Murray Dobbin says in the Tyee anyway.

An important lesson. A dictator is still a dictator, even if he resides on the far side of the left spectrum like you do...

The inevitable end to a bad idea. Where is Sean Penn?
So why the relative silence? Part of the reason is that campus activism is a left-wing phenomenon, making it awkward to target left-wing villains.

A larger reason is that, until a few years ago, the Venezuelan regime was a cause of the left, cheered by people like Naomi Klein, Sean Penn and Danny Glover. Left-wing publications such as Glenn Greenwald’s “The Intercept” have gone out of their way to make excuses for the regime and treat its critics as Washington stooges. Jeremy Corbyn, who could yet be Britain’s next prime minister, memorialized the late dictatorHugo Chávez in 2013 for his “massive contributions to Venezuela & a very wide world.”

Even today, the criticism is amazingly muted. If Klein has seriously come to terms with Maduro’s tyranny or Venezuela’s catastrophe, she has not done it in The Nation, The Guardian, or anywhere indexed by LexisNexis or Factiva. Corbyn’s response to Maduro’s repression has been to voice his condemnation of “the violence that’s been done by any side, by all sides” — a piece of obfuscatory equivalence worthy of Donald Trump’s Charlottesville remark. Penn and Glover seem to have moved on to other causes, like bashing Trump. Such courage.

Too funny. Reading that article is great. The Tyee should publish that again . Stand behind their story you know. Maybe they could send a rich white journalist to Caracas. The locals would love to tell a story or two i am sure.

Glowing flowery love for Chavez and socialism. My god. Look what that got Venezuelans.

This mass migration, however, started even earlier, when now-deceased leader Hugo Chavez took office in 1999. Millions of Venezuelans have fled the country in the last 20 years. More than one million Venezuelans have moved to Colombia since 2017, according to the Red Cross. And that number covers only those who passed through approved checkpoints.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/20 ... b4ceda3e02

According to U.N. figures, some 2.3 million Venezuelans — about 7 percent of the population — have left their homeland over the past couple of years. Other estimates place the number at closer to 4 million.

Socialism at it's best. Completely ruined a once great country.

click on safety and security, it's long with dangers

starts with this and continues

Crime

Venezuela has one of the world’s highest homicide rates. Murder and other violent crimes, including armed robbery, home invasion, carjacking and kidnapping for ransom, are pervasive throughout the country. Violence against locals and visitors alike can occur in both urban and rural areas, including in those popular with tourists. Organized criminal groups and gangs are rampant. Many criminals carry firearms, and victims are often injured or killed for failing to cooperate. If you are threatened, stay calm and do not resist.

Pro-tip. Socialism isn’t the cause of Venezuela’s problems.
