But there are no Russian trolls or bots

Postby Ka-El » Aug 25th, 2018, 6:02 am

As deadly measles outbreak spreads, Russian trolls and bots spread antivax messages.

Another ally of those arguing that the measles vaccine spreads autism: Russia-based bots and trolls, a recent article in the American Journal of Public Health argues. (Cynically, their creators also made more bots and trolls to argue the other side; one purpose was, simply, division for its own sake.)

The study’s authors traced the accounts to the same source as those who intervened in the 2016 U.S. election., the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency.

The Russian tweets were different from more organic antivax messages, the study’s authors wrote:

“These included arguments related to racial/ethnic divisions, appeals to God, and arguments on the basis of animal welfare. These are divisive topics in US culture, which we did not see frequently discussed in other tweets related to vaccines.”

They also introduced conspiracy theories about government that antivaxers generally don’t, for example:
• “Apparently only the elite get ‘clean ’ #vaccines. And what do we, normal ppl, get?! #VaccinateUS”
• “Did you know there was a secret government database of #vaccine-damaged children? #VaccinateUS”
The tweets were also used as a way of distributing malware.

Why not use bots in cyberwarefare? It's a lot cheaper than planes and tanks. It's not like their economy can keep up with the traditional arms race. It's mind boggling to me that the Republicans refuse to do anything about them when 10 years old boys can hack into their election process. Maybe that's what the spineless Republicans think will win them the midterms, help from the Russian. What has happened to the once proud law and order party? Is it the beginning of the end for them?

If not cyberwarfare, then free advertising. I think this is probably something every government does, if not citizens to some degree. It boggles me how military data can be stolen. Chinese are even caught walking through corn fields in Iowa stealing seeds since they don’t want to pay for their own research. Theft, sabotage, ideologies, most countries are continually at war because they secretly hate each other or are looking for advantages to control.

I think this is a form of warfare, isn't it? With the proliferation of fake news and the election of Trump
the Russians are already dividing and destabilizing western democracies without firing a shot.

Well maybe you need to know who gave away the internet....and it's neutrality.

And why all these so called Russian bots...

Ted Cruz speech of 2016....

… so this why all the CENSORSHIP now? …

Under a plan that’s been in the works for years, the US Department of Commerce shuttled control of the DNS to a nonprofit called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), whose multiple stakeholders include technical experts, as well as representatives of governments and businesses. Cruz and other critics had argued the transfer could lead to authoritarian countries taking control of the internet and eventually censoring content throughout the world.

US hands internet control to ICANN – CNET

US hands internet control to ICANN

The long-planned turnover takes place, but not before triggering an outcry from critics.

I forgot to mention the so-called "alternative" news sources - the right are so easily played.

Yeah, but you should see them!
There never was much evidence shown to the public, and when you go looking for examples of Russian meddling, most of what you see is twitter messages, or memes that anyone in America would also have done. America is responsible for the majority of their own disinformation. I say Trump and Hillary are where they are now on their own accord. No evidence of tampering with voting machines. The left is so mad about Trump as president they’ll whining about such an insignificant amount of memes and calling it a cyberattack. On the scale of cyberattacks, it is pretty pathetic.

3,500 ads or memes is like 0.0000001% of the memes and *bleep* out there if even that. CBC was a larger influence in the USA election with their 24/7H denigration of Trump.

As much as the alt right (and perhaps deliberately the Russians?) would like to further divisiveness and polarization amongst western societies by making denigration of the Trump presidency a left vs right issue, it is not. It is more of a reasonably sane and intelligent vs the not so reasonably sane and intelligent issue. People deriding and laughing at Trump with well-deserved disgust include the vast majority of us in the center (whether center-left or center-right), and we hope that will in due course come to include those who have previously been blinded by their partisan loyalties. We hope that more reasonably intelligent people might ultimately come to put some real thought into the matter and recognize the very real danger of identity politics and populism remembering the adage “those who do remember the past are doomed to repeat it”. Beyond his buffoonery and criminality and ongoing efforts to increasingly putrefy the swamp, Trump support has promoted and fed on the very worst in people’s fears and prejudices and he presents a clear and present danger. To underestimate or discount Russia’s involvement or interest in watching our western democracies collapse from within would be both naïve and hazardous.

All of a sudden you care about Western democracies? Huh?

Oh my God, there is a chance! :130:

All of a sudden I care about Western democracies? Oh my God, I wonder if you even have a clue just how utterly ridiculous and stupid you make yourself appear sometimes. I have always championed democracy in any topic even remotely related to the issue. Effective democracies require an educated electorate capable of critical thought – something I have always promoted while it is something you have consistently demonstrated a complete disdain for. You can’t even tell the difference between and socialist and a liberal and is spite of the information and links being made available you have been too lazy to bother and try. Educated and informed decision making requires dependable evidence and information gained from solid investigation and research, not lapping up “alternative facts” from the wacko-sites and conspiracy bloggers. You need to quit breathing in the chemtrails joe. The truth is out there, but you’re not going to find it on your alternative news sites or watching reruns of the X-Files. The dumbing down of the electorate, as evidenced by people like yourself, is one of the greatest risks to democracy. You are a joke joe, and the inference that it is you who cares about democracy is one of your funniest yet.

Wow!!!! It took only 8 1/2 hours for your thread to end up in the Skidrow portion of Castanet forums!

That's got to be some kind of Castanet record you set there?

Unbelievable!

By the way! I thought you said you weren't talking to me anymore? :D
