Translink can't come up with enough $$ now! So some dingbat wants the rest of the province to subsidize their fares?? Pffft!

Vancouver city politics is a black hole! They didn't bother to keep up with their own social housing policies, and now all of us are paying for that malfeasance. Now this silliness. COPE is a disaster, always has been, I knew some of them when Harry Rankin was around, diehard communists that couldn't tie their own shoes or add 2+3 and get the right answer.

We already subsidize driving cars, seems only prudent to do the same for more efficient modes of transportation ...

Programs like this should be based on ability to pay only, those in legitimate need should get a hand up from those with $$ to spare. Age is not an accurate measure of ability to pay.

Don't we already have programs to help those that are truly in need. At the very best we should be reviewing those programs not starting new ones. These programs cost way too much to run. We do not need to keep piling them up, each with it's own little bureaucracy.
Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have of changing others.

Do we differentiate the amount we subsidise a driver of a Mercedes vs a driver of a Ford Focus? I agree that we need to lower the amount administration costs ... admin expense is part of the argument against bicycle licensing ... so let's just base the decisions on the best bang for the buck ... how many people will be able to benefit?

I agree with the most bang for our buck theory and that is what I was trying to get at. Yes we do differentiate between the driver of a Mercedes and a Ford Focus. One pays much more for their car and therefore much more taxes into the government coffers. That even happens again when it comes to maintenance, licence fees etc. So yes for sure we do differentiate. They supposedly can afford it so they pay accordingly.

spooker - you are way off the mark. Car drivers pay a myriad of taxes, tolls etc. etc. $13 billion in gasoline taxes alone!

Can you imagine the taxes needed to pay for silly bike lanes? I pay $147 for my license plate. How much should a bicycle road plate cost? How much for insurance on a bicycle? How much tax to pay for bike lanes? The per user tax would be very, very significant. So that's subsidized, not the auto drivers who pay, pay, pay.

We do not subsidize cars. "We" tax the heck out of them.

I love the last sentence because its so true As soon as I tuned 65 I get a FL for $7 instead of like $39

yet I can afford the $39 more now than I could a few years back

Do you know that none of the money you pay for your plate goes to the roadways? And much of the reason for high taxes is because we have to have more and more roads to drive our cars ... plus all the maintenance that requires ...

I digress ... back to the subject

We saw the results of the local citizen survey last week ... "Traffic Congestion" is still top of the list ... and we know that Vancouver has it worse than us ... as a parent I am required to get my child to their ascribed activities but does that require me to drive them around in the car all the time?

I remember getting around with the transit system when I was 12 years old ... great sense of freedom from that ... anything that can encourage anyone to leave the car at home solves two problems, a) traffic congestion, and b) pollution ... why would we want to stop that from happening?

Even if you are the most selfish driver and live by the adage "they won't get my car until they pry it from my cold dead hands" how can you not want to encourage other people to leave there cars at home? it leaves you more room on the road ...
