The absolute best way to get rid of lice is to use a medicated shampoo and then comb your hair (daily) with a special, metal comb designed at getting the eggs and lice. Comb your hair every day for at least ten days (longer if you have a bad case). And then for the next month do a check once or twice a week to make sure its gone.
I have used white vinegar before and it kills the lice but it doesn't get rid of the eggs. The hairdressers also have some lice stuff that uses natural products, but I didn't find it that helpful with my kids. I personally found the comb worked best out of everything.
For around the house, we've cleaned the carpets and bedding. All stuffed animals were placed in a plastic bag for two weeks and the rooms just got a more thorough cleaning (and repeated after a few days).
Its incredibly tiresome and this year has been a doozy for head lice around the schools.
Good luck
