I used a combination of tea tree oil, regular combing with a nit comb and tons of laundry.

I have read different oils...and the laundry yes, and garbage bags for stuff that does not wash. I was very shocked to find them, and have the heebee geebee's....just want to shave my head...LOL...and I am a clean person, and I guess they like clean. The stigma is funny though, as I found out through salons and pharmacy today.

If dealing with fine hair, get the metal nit comb. The one that comes in the tea tree oil kit is useless on fine to normal hair.
Tea tree is the least toxic treatment.
Suffocate the little *bleep* by massaging tea tree shampoo and plenty-o-plenty of tea tree oil into the root area of the hair wrap the head in plastic wrap leaving it overnight. (they die after 8 hrs of no air) Wash it out in the morning. After the washing conditioner helps by glomming onto them so they are more visible and it makes hair easy to comb through with the fine, metal comb.
Repeat the shampoo/overnight gig every 7 days for 3 weeks. Still, comb daily.
They hate coconut, so find good coconut shampoo/conditioner, artificial scents won't work, read ingredients.
Vacuum and vacuum and vacuum, wash wash wash linens in HOT water.
I hope this helps.

Using a hair straightener will help nuke the ones that were pulled down the hair but not out. They climb back up to the warm scalp fast otherwise.

Nightmare! Best of luck ridding your life of the horrible little buggers! It took having one kid at camp, the other shaved bald and a month to win that battle. I've (since) been told that a regular treatment of tea tree oil will prevent them from taking up residence in your scalp but I haven't tried that yet. So far so good with driving home the importance of keeping a safe distance and not sharing combs, hats, etc.

Save-on has it in the make-up section and possibly in the pharmacy section as well. Nature's Fare has it. Watch the prices and compare. It can be very pricey.

There is also a kit at Shoppers, ask at the pharmacy because it is not in the hair product section.
