I just bought four big perfect looking tomatoes

Post by Thinktank »

These tomatos @ $1.27/lb were perfect.

SIZE = 100/100 - perfectly big
SHAPE = 100/100 - perfectly round
COLOR = 100/100 - perfect red/orange
PRICE - not bad
COSMETICALLY - perfect - 100/100 (not a blemish to be seen)

FLAVOUR - 3/100 - tasted like cardboard.

Don't you think that's cool, how our food is looking better and better?

Where are they from? Maybe they were picked green.

it actually would be nice to know exactly how that tomato came from
mexico to the shelf in the store.

how green was it picked
how many days it spent travelling
any pesticides used after harvesting?

most people don't have a clue and I'm one of them.

If you want to learn more about the tomato industry check out a great book called Tomatoland. It will answer all of your questions in great detail (it really only focuses on field tomatoes from Florida though). This book is right up your alley Thinktank.

IMO, anything not grown locally or in my own garden, tastes like nothing. We pay so much for tomatoes in the supermarkets and they are so bland. If I could, I would grow them year round, but we have no space here to do so. I am anxiously awaiting the first of the year. I think we have 40 plants this year.

There is no tomato in the world that has flavour comparable to a fresh Brandywine from my backyard.

When I don't have my own I also buy as locally as possible.

Why would you buy a tomato from Mexico just to complain about it????

As for your questions, it would be trucked most likely, picked green, travelled a few days, dunked in fungicide.

Instead, why not avert your eyes, move to that location in the store, and buy something local?

Lots of things can look perfect till you actually try them.

Sort of like my ex-husbands ;)

Truthfully Think, buying local is usually a safe bet it will taste better than the Mexican and US ones. Plus, you are supporting your own province by buying local.

What exactly is this scale you're basing it on, and what makes you an expert to use such a scale?

I too can't wait for the garden and fresh picked tomatoes, in the meantime, when we buy they are BC even if they are more money at least they taste like one.
