Mumps cases are still rare in North America, but have seen a bit of resurgence since the mid-2000s, after people began avoiding the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine because of data falsely linking it to autism.

However, the CDC says it’s possible for those who’ve received the MMR vaccine to still get the mumps. One dose is of the MMR vaccine is 78 per cent and a “very small percentage of people may not be protected even after a second dose,” according to the CDC.

Considering yearly cases of the mumps in the 1960's were in the range of 200000 cases per year (in the US), and that number was declined steadily in the 1970's to cases numbering in the 100's per year after vaccine use became widespread, it's pretty clear that the vaccine is effective. Even in "outbreak" year, the number of cases rose to 5000 to 6000 cases per year. Concerning, but still significantly lower than the numbers in the 1960's. If the number of players that still got the mumps after getting vaccinated seems like "more than a small percentage" to you, the math would indicate otherwise.

yet everyone THINKS they know. What people are doing - is just trusting the vaccine manufacturers.

I'm positive flu shots have ZERO benefit, but that doesn't stop 50% of the people from

Cases of mumps have decreased because of the vaccine as have other diseases that also have vaccines to protect against them. Pretty good indication vaccines are worthwhile.

Because they reduce your chance in getting the mumps or whatever illness ... there is no 100% elimination. Just like your car, even if you maintain it properly, you can still break down. Or if you have a headache, sometimes a Tylenol doesn't seem to work.
