It is well known that the MMR vaccine is not 100% effective - in fact it's been stated

if a patient receives the two shots, the vaccine is 88 percent effective and 77 percent if only one is delivered. "That means if 100 people are exposed to mumps which is real contagious...and they're all vaccinated, 12 will still get mumps," he elaborated. "It doesn't mean that vaccinations don't work. We know that 12 percent of the time, the mumps vaccine does not work. However most scientists and physicians will tell you that they believe that when a vaccinated person gets a disease like mumps, they believe it's less severe."

Having had the measles, mumps and rubella, it's still worthwhile getting the vaccine to prevent the seriousness and aftermath of the diseases. Showing symptoms is nothing like having the illness full blown and missing a few weeks of life.

Wrong. Showing symptoms does not mean they actually have the virus. Global News reported several players back on Canucks lineup as they were tested and did not have mumps. Ben Hutton for one and Markus Granlund for another.

No documented cases of mumps have been reported in the Okanagan, but Interior Health's chief medical health officer says the recent Vancouver Canucks outbreak provides a good reminder of the importance of immunization.

Several Canucks were recently kept off the ice due to an outbreak of the highly contagious virus. The WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers were also recently affected.

Dr. Trevor Corneil says the mumps spread through mucus, and can be contracted through things like sharing a water bottle.

Symptoms include swollen glands, a sore throat, fever, aches and pains, swelling of cheeks, abdominal pain in women and testicle pain in men.

The virus can be dangerous for young children, and Corneil says one in 20 cases prove serious.

“We don't hear about them anymore because we have good vaccination rates in most of our areas, but people can become quite ill,” Corneil said. “They can get meningitis, they can also get secondary pneumonia, they can get other related infections that result in hospitalization.”

The last mumps outbreak in Interior Health's region was in 2013, when the virus hit another hockey team.

IH has a monitoring system in place, in conjunction with local doctors, to track when and how an outbreak occurs.

“We try to do everything that we can do to try and keep an outbreak from happening,” he said.

He says for protection against contracting the mumps, two immunizations are required.

While most young people received these shots as children, those born between 1970 and the mid-90s may have received only one, and could require a booster shot. Those born prior to 1970 are most likely immune.

A mumps outbreak occurred in Whistler last summer and spread to Squamish and Vancouver.
