A KOBO will read a PDF file. You want one with a backlight.
You could read with a tablet as well if you can use it for anything else it would save you some money.
The Amazon Fire is supposed to be an excellent value.
The big advantage to an e-reader over a tablet is battery life. I only need to recharge my KOBO once every few weeks depending on how much I read while my Tablet needs to be done every day or 2.
