Questions for those seeking a position on the Kelowna City Council in the November elections

How will you encourage community participation around the discussions on major developments, parks and trails, and transit? Do you value the input of Community/Neighbourhood Associations?

How can the value of community amenities be increased when developers seek to build projects that exceed OCP bylaws? What will your policies insure that for increases in density and height the City receives substantial, tangible amenities that improve the surrounding adjacent neighbourhoods and are not simply “cash in lieu” deals?

How will endeavour to increase the mix of low income/lower cost housing in each major new development?

How will your endeavour to increase further development of our non–central urban centres like Pandosy Village and Rutland?

How will endeavour to encourage and support the development of new clean technological and agricultural industries in Kelowna?

Kelowna, if it is going to thrive into the future must be more than just a tourist/retirement town. Currently the major employers are Flightcraft, SD23, and the college and university. I would like to see how future councillors want to grow Kelowna. Currently most of the platforms I have seen are insular and focused solely on reducing taxes and services that by definition are not designed to “grow Kelowna” into the future.

Every Council candidate has been sent a personalized request to respond to the questions. I will post their responses. However, the other side of the question coin was to stimulate forum contributors to look beyond the superficial hair styles, smiles, platitudes and ask some questions themselves to see who are the best candidates.

After reading through the Taxpayers First website, I'm convinced their election would be one of the worst things that could happen to the city. They're out of touch with reality with no concrete plan on how to fund their 0% tax increase for 4 years. Their entire platform is based on the idea that the current spending is incredibly mishandled and poorly run. How they think they can find tens of millions of dollars in waste and then make the cuts while avoiding cutting essential services (and potential lawsuits for breach of contract) is beyond me. This claim is irresponsible, unrealistic, and impossible. It's nothing more than an election ploy that they won't be able to follow through on.

What they're completely missing the point on is that people won't mind paying higher taxes if they're getting value for their money. What they should be doing is finding the waste, then using those funds to enhance what we already have. Their plan will result in cuts, but nothing new because they won't have anything leftover after inflationary forces and current obligations.

Also, the increased use of referendums they're proposing is a terrible idea. I don't want referendums on every little thing council does. I want to elect people who are skilled and knowledgeable enough to make those decisions. It seems they're scared to make the tough decisions themselves and want to defer to all of us. That's definitely not the type of leadership I want.

They also say tax increases affect seniors the most... seniors can defer their taxes if they want. I'd argue that they are affected less than everyone else because of this.

Here's another quote from Taxpayers First:

Recent studies show that the average Canadian spends more on taxes than on food, shelter and clothing combined. This means that for all of us there is less money for our childrens' education, retirement savings, paying down debt, and spending back into our local economy.

Do they realize that our taxes pay for education? And their proposal could lead to a reduction in education spending?

Where do they think taxes are spent? Obviously not the local economy, because they blame taxes as keeping money out of the local economy. I guess they think Kelowna council takes our tax money and spends it in other cities.

They also make mention of 300 city employees that make over $75,000 and have pensions. They want to review these salaries and benefits, and make adjustments where appropriate. How do they propose to break these employment contracts without facing huge legal battles and initiating a huge turnover of experienced employees?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying here isn't room to improve spending. But their platform is extremely dangerous, naive, and unrealistic.

And they're proposing more useless referendums. The last thing I want to do is go vote a few times per month every time somebody is afraid of or incapable of making a decision. This isn't how democracy works. I vote for someone I want to make these decisions. I guess it won't be either of the Condy's.
