Improvements to Castanet classifieds

Postby Troy » Oct 13th, 2011, 2:41 pm

We are looking at doing some improvements to the Classifieds section of Castanet. If there are any features you would like us to add or change in the Classifieds, please post it here or email me directly: troy@castanet.net

Thanks!

Troy, even though I have very fast internet/bandwidth, sometimes I find the image viewer is very slow to load. Sometimes it's ok, but other times it's a snail. I've only used FF(with ABP & NoScript disabled, on linux and Vista), so I'm not sure if it is browser related or not.

Also, it would help if there was a minimum image size limit. Too many times have I clicked "view more images" to see an image of something I'm interested in, and it loads the same freakin' miniature thumbnail as shown on the ad.!! There must be a way of preventing people from uploading 10x10 pixel images?

Hi Troy, could you please find a way to tazer people who sell their item but "forget" to take the ad off Castanet?

And a nice way to say, ADD MEASUREMENTS to your ad, or be prepared with the measurements of said item in a convienant spot, or be prepared with a tape measure to measure the item while the potential buyer is on the phone with you so that you can find out if the call is a total waste of time for the potential buyer.

And tell them to be truthful about the condition of said item. Or add a report button on the ad if the item is not as advertised, as in "good condition" does not mean burns on the arms of the chair.

Thanks! :sunshine:

I miss being able to browse through the real estate section like all the other sections.

Yeah, I must say the real estate section is rather annoying.

I'm not the only one :sunshine:

I like being able to search for keywords instead of the MLS-style.

Oh ya, I agree about the real estate section. As everyone said above.

i love castanet, i spend most of my computer time scouring through it. the only change i would like to see would be a separate catagories for car tires and truck tires. when i search for tires there are soo many now that 15,16,17,18, 20" tires cars and trucks. or just separate car and truck parts altogether. if people could separate the truck stuff from the car stuff that would be great. it may not be feesible but i figured it was worth asking. thanks. shawn.

make the motorcycle parts have its own sub sections,e.g.: HARLEY PARTS ..i hate having to scroll thru so many of these while i look at other bike parts. it would be better if these where more specific like- euro parts -asian parts etc..any way i like the classifieds keep up the great work everyone...

I believe it's already been mentioned but due to user incompetence/laziness it would be really good to see the ads vaporize after say 14 days.

If the listing hasn't sold in that time then the person would simply have to relist the item.

I find past history has shown that there are far too many items displayed that have already been sold or the owner has changed his/her mind about selling yet the ad is still there.

It makes for a lot of wasted time.

First off I will say that I love castanet classifieds, and it's hard to complain about such a great service when it is free!

As far as improvements go, however, I have to say I'm not a fan of the recently "improved" image viewer. The old version used to let you open the images individually to see them in their original size. This way if the original image doesn't fit on screen for whatever reason the browser will shrink it but will still allow you to view full size by clicking the image. The new viewer is ok (but not great) on a standard 4:3 monitor but with a widescreen monitor the viewer auto-sizes and ends up shrinking the images down, making it difficult to see detail, and there is no way to see the full-size image.

The problem is even worse if you use larger fonts on your machine (I have my pc displaying on a 32" LCD and font sizes increased to see from a distance.) In this situation the "supersized" images end up being the same size or even smaller than the thumbnails. Something similar to the way Kijiji displays the images would be better.

Thanks!

Something that has come to my attention today while looking for some items is that. When you do an advanced search for an item it resets the sort by feature and visa versa. Very annoying. If I select sort by lowest price it should lock that till I change it.

There are too many subtopics in some catagories. For instance auto parts, exterior parts do not need subtopics exterior parts is sufficent.
Some items can fit in more than one catagory, and should be allowed in more than one.
AQlso have the city or town that the seller is in posted in the add.I don't want to look at adds from other cities with out knowing that the add is from another city. On the other hand it should be easier to post adds into other cities like Vernon and Penticton as long as the add states what city the seller is in.

I love Castanet classifieds! For the most part, everything is fine. The only thing that bugs me sometimes is when I'm browsing ads and find one I want to reply to, I go login and it takes me back to the beginning and I have to search for the ad again. It would be nice to login and go right back to where I was.
