Lack of winter road maintenance
I wonder how many accidents this year have been cause by city negligence of the roads this winter? How many cars went off Dilworth this year as compared to other years? Today's Glenmore road accident is being blamed on the roads. I have travelled over Dilworth in early morning for over 20 years and this year (and today) the roads are not sanded or salted when I travel them and they always were in years past. Has something changed?

People turned their brains off. Drive to road conditions.

Maybe you guys need to pull your heads out of your a***s and realize you all wanted a 0% tax increase. This isn't just the reason for the roads being "poorly maintained" but it's playing a massive part in it. People in this town need to stop driving like absolute morons and abide by the speed limits and slow the hell down in these conditions. I drove down from Goudie this morning on black ice all the way to town with no problems while doing 70km. Stop blaming the city for all your mistakes, the department of highways is in the same boat. Can't have a thousand plow trucks on the road. It only takes a few minutes for every wet road to ice up so give them a break. People in this town need to slow the F down and learn to drive, what do you think people up North have to deal with on a daily basis. Use winter tires, slow down, and dont wait till the last second to brake. I see *bleep* on the road everyday in Kelowna and it appauls me. How someone can drive off a road while going straight is beyond me, get your foot off the gas and your hands off your god damn phones. I have no sympathy for any of these people.

I wonder how many accidents are caused by driving to fast for road conditions? I wonder how many of these accidents are caused by sheer stupidity of the driver of a motor vehicle. Oh, shame on me, the truth is no longer politically correct.

Re: Lack of winter road maintenance
That all being said, there is no reason that after a day of melting and the city work department knowing that temps will dip well below freezing that night, that the city shouldn't be out putting some mix down on the main arterial roads. The multiple number of accidents on Glenmore is the biggest tell tale. This road at its elevation is the most susceptible to icing up. and with an 80 km/h speed limit, it should be of the utmost priority when it comes to sanding.
The city is simply doing the right job in the wrong places. They should be starting high and ending low. Downtown is the last priority place that should be sanded, yet that is where most of the trucks are when it snows.

Just because the sign says 80 km/h does not mean you go that speed when conditions are icy. Speed limit signs are posted for ideal driving conditions.
Now I suppose every idiot and his uncle will want the signs changed when road conditions change. Grow up people and take responsibility for your own stupidity when behind the wheel.

Re: Lack of winter road maintenance
It's quite simple:
1. It rained this weekend
2. It gets cold at night
3. Ice forms when it's cold
4. If the road looks shiny there's probably ice
Quit being a dick and slow down. It's called winter.

For some of them the road always looks shiny because they're stoned.

No no no. It can't be the fault of the driver. It must be the roads, the city, Mother Nature, aliens, etc....

I wonder where the OP crashed?
There's no cause for alarm in the NDP ranks. I have it on good authority that if the polls get too close, Adrian Dix will back date them to April '13.

Accidents happen and when they do, blame the weather, never the driver. I'm going down one of those hills on Dilworth happen and I decide to slow down because there is snow on the road and a little slippery. Sure enough, some weekend warrior in a Ford F350 decides to tailgate me, then flash his lights at me but didn't have the guts to pass me. I must have been going too slow by his standards. My only thought was how much help was I going to give him if he went off the side of the road! Slow down!

Ha, no I never crashed but I have had to put the truck in 4x4 to get up the unsanded icy hills at 5 in the morning.

Re: Lack of winter road maintenance
I think that the road in the Glenmoore accident is unsafe, the City needs to spend no less than $50k to have someone tell us, it wasn't the road.
I know that intersection very well. It is one you must be patient at as when vehicles are coming into the City it is deceiving. Chances are someone left the stop sign before safe to do so and was the cause of the accident. Second guess if it was not that stop sign, it was someone couldn't wait to make that left hand turn failing to yield when turning left.
Again, its not the roads it is those who drive them. I will say it is rare that a vehicle spins out and goes off the road then travelling up hill when considering the Dilworth accidents.

Re: Lack of winter road maintenance
I witnessed a guy this morning who was probably going at least twice the speed limit on an icy road. Its only a matter of time before he drives off the road and crashes or something. People need to slow down because it ISN'T gangsta or cool to zip around town at very high speeds like the world runs through your fingers.

How many of these threads do we need?
If you're complaining, perhaps you should buy, own, and drive a sand truck at 3am every day of the winter.
