Have you tried pet finder? http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?ani ... rch=Search
As for a breed that is a wonderful family pet and excellent with children, I highly recommend a boxer. They are goofy, full of energy, adore children, and retain their puppy like enthusiasm and antics into their senior years. They are for the most part, a high energy dog, so they do require exercising. They do have prey drive, so it's best to get them as a puppy if you want them to accept cats and/or other small critters. I got my first boxer 8 yrs ago and have become hooked. My home will always have a boxer in it. They are thinkers, and if their brain is not stimulated, they can get into mischief. They can be stubborn, but are also quite sensitive as well. They require gentle yet firm leadership. They crave human companionship and always want to be with their humans. As I write this, my boxer girl is wedged between me and the couch. :)

Re: It's time
I own a German Shepherd and 2 American Curl cats and a Turkish Angora cat.
I find that the German Shepherd is a very smart willing to learn dog. It is good as a guard dog and as a family dog, my 2 and 1/2 year old grandson plays with my dog quite often and I haven't had any problems.
I know you said that your husband doesn't want a Shepherd, but I would ask you to reconsider, they are the 3rd most intelligent breed of dog (Border collies are 1st and Standard poodles are 2nd) and are easily trained and are good with kids and other animals.
If you are worried about cost, some breeders will let their retired show dogs go for a reasonable price and there are breed rescue groups that rescue purebreds and adopt them out for a good price. Good luck in your search!

Tonight we pick up our purebred golden retriever from the ferry. we really went back in forth on a purebred or rescue dog and with 2 young children we need to know more about the bred of dog we were getting.
