Wow ...
This thread is a perfect example of internet bullying. From alduts no less.. Ganging up on the OP. Can't imagine what young teenagers are going through ... must be awful ...
The OP never said he or she was against giving to the less fortunate.

I wait for the fire fighters each year with a bag or two of food. I actually buy specifically for this event. This year I was wondering why I heard sirens so close to the house because I missed the notice in the paper that lets the Westside know what days they will be out collecting. I actually asked the Fire Chief if the notices were posted and Wayne assured me they were. Luckily I was well prepared. Good on the fire department for volunteering their time to help out the food bank at this time of year.

fall wrote:The fire dept or probably the wvfd westside volunteer fire hall are going around the neighbourhoods with their sirens and lights going knocking on everyones door requesting food donations, seems pretty desperate and I think people are bombarded more than enough to donate without a fire truck blaring the siren on the streets and several firefighters/ volunteer firefighters disturbing people for donations! I thought maybe it was an emergency gas leak etc!

^^ OP's first post

My response to quote below: Right back atcha - no one said fall wasn't allowed to express their opinion - in fact is welcomed. I am also allowed to express mine but doesn't mean I don't listen so don't assume it's bullying to comment back.

No, I won't give it a rest or else I don't hear a different opinion from mine.

Im sure im not and im sure other people quite enjoy the appearance! either way food gets donated by those who can or are in a position to give money and at the end of the day it makes it to the people who could use it whether it was collected and presented by the fireman for credit doing so or people dropping in bins anonymously or helping making a difference in many ways!

So if they didnt come to your door would you still donate elsewhere at any of the many locations? or do you like to be aknowledged by Wayne or whoever by handing the bag or bags to them in person so they can drop it off? would you not buy specifically to help the people? Was their time really needed? wherever you bought the items was there no bin, most major grocery stores even have them year round! at least im not the only one who missed the flyer.

We look forward to the firemen coming around collecting every December..... We go out and purchase baby food items for this every year.

The new firemen, the high school students who are in the Boucherie class to become fire fighters and the seasoned guys are fantastic to talk to and they love what they are volunteering for.

We drop off funds for the kettles once or twice, donate to a couple of charities and give to the Westbank Fire Dept as it stays in our community.

To each their own whether they love or hate it, it is for a great cause.

this is the one time of year that our family donates.it is not just a can of bean or pasta..i buy every year a 10 lb bag of flour.a 10 ld bag of sugar and at least 2whole reusable bags of canned food.and thay also get to keep the bagsplus we donate gifts for small childrem aged 2-5....we are not well off by all means,,but it is the one time of year that we should put all aside our diferences and just be thankfull for the family that we have...or our adoptive families that we all have through the holidays..we love to see the fire trucks in our neighbourhood....and a big thank you to them for volunteering their time for this cheery event...merry christmas all!!!!

:124: to all who donated when the fireman came around.

Girlfriend volunteered at the food bank drop-off centre this year. Talked to her last night and she said they processed the donations the fireman collected earlier this week and dropped off yesterday. She worked from 1-5 pm and said she counted close to 3,000 items between 1-3 pm. Each item, no matter the size, counts as 1 item before it's divided up. i.e.: a box of instant oatmeal contains 10 packages but counts as 1 item before being opened; a 10 lb. bag of sugar counts as 1 item before being divided into smaller packages, etc.

For some people maybe it is an event. I have two young boys and they get a kick out of any chance to say hi to a fireman.

Yes, there are multiple opportunities everywhere you go to make foodbank donations, many of those stores have them set up year round, and it is easy to look past them and not see them. So if the fire dept creates an awareness and people prep for it, in all likely hood the foodbank is getting better quality items because some thought has been put into the donation rather then hurridly grabbing a box of KD and tossing it in the bin. The winner ends up being the foodbank and the people that use it.

Saying no is an acceptable option as well. The first year we lived here, this collection caught us unawares and the fireman at the door took our sorry with a smile and a Merry Christmas, so if you choose to donate to other causes or not, good on ya and no worries either way.

I thank the volunteers and staff who came out last week and reminded us that there are those that can use real life sustaining goods. I do make annual committed donations but having a real person come to the door attaches a significant link to remind me there are so many that need help. Our volunteer that came to the door was young, kind, polite and reminded me of two important matters of helping others less fortunate; one that a person donates their time to help collect and second, a real person is there to remind me that I can help others. My annual donation has almost been forgotten.

Thank you for the dedication of so few that can help so many.

Maybe they go door to door for the people are not able to get out and go to all these other drop boxes. If you have nothing to give, they are not going to look down on you, but instead wish you a Merry Christmas and move on. I love seeing them every year and always have something set aside for them. My son loves seeing them and the firetrucks and it makes him feel like he is helping. I think it is great and they have been doing it for several years now.
