But seriously, I think you're reading way too much into it.

It's all about imaging. It seems that is the image of the police in today's standards - a paramilitary organization. Not a officer in uniform, a solider. It really is a telling situation considering they chose the image and this was more about telling the media as it was telling the criminals they are being watched.

The Vancouver PD has a Armored Personnel Carrier for when the crackheads on Main get rowdy and set up a hardened .50 Cal bunker, and now the Abbotsford PD has Santa-soldiers ready to fight a fictitious war - just sayin. It's a media blitz and that is my take on it.

Gramma, maybe you could take your sweet little old lady act to a maternity ward near you and have a look at the little babies there and pick out which ones are going to grow up to break into your great granddaughters house, shouldn't be too hard after all the stupid ones stick right out just like on here.

if not and they all look sweet and Innocent now then maybe life affects them differently, maybe some wil live life in poverty, some will be beaten and abused, some will be loved and some will be tortured...

At some point everyone becomes accountable for their actions but what some heartless people cant seem to get through their thick well fed, happy little lives is that, for some, the choice about who they will be was taken away not long after they were taken "home" from the hospital and right and wrong doesnt figure into it.

hell for half the world its right to walk into a market with a bomb strapped to themselves.

Oddly enough, I've never read a Farley Mowat. But I know what people well past their 80s have told me about growing up on the prairies between the 1920s-40s. I assure you, your idyllic view, almost pasteural, is quite misplaced.

As it stands, with your logic you can justify a missile defensive shield system for Kelowna. The RCMP have never been engaged with assault rifle fire (and if you are you need to call in the military in - just like they did in the North Hollywood shootout) and you have never been fired upon by a Maverick air-to-ground missile system but given your frame of mind you could use defensive missile shield infrastructure just incase the Hells Angels "step it up a notch" and start launching salvo's.

Our streets are not a movie. If you want to fight join the military.

Wonder if the Abbotsford Police have got any Christmas Cards in return from individuals on the bad guys list.

Can see a card coming back saying “Have a Happy Holiday and wishing you a frustrating 2013 trying to catch and convict me. Otherwise all the best in the New Year.”

Think the picture of the heavy armed policeman on the card will just boost the ego of these criminals. Some will probably be proudly showing the card to their buddies telling them this how the cops have to come for me.

Suggest a better picture would be a dejected bad guy in a prison suit sitting in a bleak cell while Santa walks by dragging his baton along the bars.

As I read this today I couldn't help but wonder if anyone esle thought it was a ridiculous idea. How laughable. What a waste of taxpayers money and a serious joke to criminals.

I think its a great idea....who wouldnt want a xmas card from Santa? The police have it down on this one...too bad you dont. It wasnt the RCMP that did this...maybe you should change you headline.

I am begining to see a pattern....
First let me go on record as supporting the obvious humour the Abbotsford Polce have employed. If it one person thinks about the meaning, then great! The cards are being sent to the hard core dufusses not the shoplifters.
Now, for the meat of this discussion. Someone has posted has posted that our local RCMP have never had military weapon fights, blah, blah.... Mr. Bacon & company would disagree , and so would the police that pursued the truck shooting at them towards Vernon last summer, but what the hey!
To believe that the police in our country can walk into any situation with only a smile to "de-escalate" has never left the armchair they post from. At anytime, a common complaint can escalate into deadly actions instantly and without warning. Further, police do not have the ability to declare a 'time out' and return later with additional weapons etc.
I do not suggest that all street members be outfitted as the Christmas greeting depicts, but be clear, those weapons and tactics are needed with trained peace officers utilizing them.
Finally, it is also clear that to supply a link to a USA SWAT TEAM to support comments made in Kelowna is completely irrelevent.
Also note the the military was not called into nor did they take part in the North Hollywood scenario. The police, and gun shop owners who gave the police heavier weapons, were the only participants. Oh yes, innocent civilians as well.

Hey I lived like that when i was a kid.... I remember when sears catalogue first put a few glossy pages in the middle and I couldn't wait to use that shiny paper in the outhouse........that sure didn't work out like I thought.

Are you sure the old farts aren't indulging in revisionist memories. You know, "when I was your age, I walked to school in a blizzard up hill...both ways!"

It's been my experience, that the only people who make light of such statements, never had to live it, weren't intimately familiar with what frost bite feels like, take owning proper winter attire for granted, and have no issue with criticizing that generation, from the comfort of their easy chair, in a climate controlled living room, while waiting for the delivery person to drop off dinner.
