My favourite cold weather food: a huge pot of beef and root vegetable stew with butternut squash, spaghetti squash, rutabaga, turnip, parsnip, carrots, celery, onions, herbs and lots of garlic.

LOL, I'm lucky enough my wife knows how to cook them. Personally, I love liver. Chicken hearts are not bad, beef tongue is tasty.

I love liver, too. How does your wife cook it? Does she bread it, fry it?

[quote="Captain Awesome"] beef tongue is tasty.

Boiled beef dinner is what my (horrible) MIL cooked!! Simmered beef tongue, then cooled, skinned and put into the clarified boullion and simmered with root vegs and cabbage.. And cold tongue sandwiches with horse radish/raw onions!! MMM... Hard to find whole beef tongue any more.. pity.

She also did a fantastic steak and kidney pie with the most scrumptious pastry. She was a nasty person but she could cook pretty near anything! And make it fantastic!

Safeway does not sell such plebeian fare. You have to find a vendor who will actually accommodate those of us who have tastes outside of the 'in the rut' group.

We source here in the Interior fresh West Coat mussels. You should try them, SL, should be easy where you live. Pasta pesto with FRESH steamed west coast mussels!! Ah...
