I was watching Susan Lambert on the news and she completely misrepresented the government's proposal. Misrepresenting the facts is her modus operandi of course. The teachers would be giving up everything in return for a ten year contract in her description but she failed to mention the fact that teacher reps would be on the committee that decided how to spend the $100 million. Oh yes, she neglected to mention the $100 million too. And she failed to mention that teachers would be receiving salary increases commensurate with those of other public employees. And she omitted the fact that teachers would have the right to strike at the start of a school year if an agreement hadn't been reached. Spin, spin, spin. Par for the course when it comes to the current leadership of the BCTF.

Just wonder if you and Christy FAILED
to mention no class size bargaining or composition.
Teachers gave up wages for this.

Class size/composition bargaining results in "one size fits all" rules that are counterproductive and hinder the process of getting resources to where they're needed. We've been all through this before George. I realize that for those of you who are committed union zealots what actually works and doesn't work takes a back seat to "stuff" for the employees. I always find that attitude very depressing, particularly when it comes to teachers and education, and it's the main reason I post on these education threads. I'm in favour of students and I'm in favour of teachers. But I'm not in favour of a union that puts greed, power, and politics ahead of what's good for students.

Then maybe you should ASK the students if they
prefer smaller class sizes, and decent support for
challenged students.

You are simply parrorting the administrators line,
and you are totally out of touch with today's classroom.

Why in the world would teachers give up bargaining for
class size and composition when they have won that right LEGALLY,
and constitutionally?

Give it up to some phoney, "independent" panel?? RIDICULOUS.

This is the single most item that affects BOTH students and teachers directly.

The maybe you should ask the students if there are some teachers in the classroom who shouldn't be there - ones who the union is protecting. How about that George?

And as for "parroting" I think you know how to do that really well! The BCTF strategy is to misrepresent the solid support that is there for special needs student and pretend that it doesn't exist and you parrot that on here all the time. Using SN students as a tool for obtaining salary increases for teachers is such a disgusting strategy.

ETA: By the way, I have a couple of reservations about the proposal as well. I would want to make sure that school-based administrators have a role on this committee. Their opinion should count. But more to the point this committee would help distribute $100 million and we simply don't have that money to spend. We should be looking for efficiencies within the system (Yes, they are there!) before creating any new $100 million fund.

Teachers will not get involved, so nothing will happen.

Time for you to face reality. Special Needs students and there numbers
in a class, was the number one reason for the strike. Nothing much has changed since then-ask the teachers.

This is nothing more than a 'Hail Mary' pass with no receivers at the other end that are eligible!

Who suggested that administrators be allowed to sit in on teachers' negotiations? I was talking about the committee that would dole out money to address class size and composition issues. You're mixing apples and oranges, as per usual, but you are right that the union will see to it that teachers will be totally un-cooperative when it comes to this proposal or in fact any other proposal from this government. If it were actually about the kids the union would be willing to discuss the ideas in this proposal but as most of us know it is not about the kids when it comes to the BCTF.

Do you have any other examples of a TEN YEAR contract?

AND give your head a shake. That committee "doling out" for class size
and composition IS doing teacher bargaining.

The BCTF is doing what they need to do and with teacher support.
