New Gun That Allows Cops to Shoot and Capture Your DNA

A new tool that would allow law enforcement to prevent criminals from running away or disappearing into a crowd before arrest was highlighted last week at The SHOT Show in Las Vegas.

The High Velocity DNA Tagging system by the U.K.-based security company Selectamark was introduced with police officers in a riot situation in mind. I would imagine the police will have just as much fun abusing this tool , In the name of public safety As they did when the tazers first came out.

Despite the sensational headline used in the article and in the title of this thread, the pellets do not capture a person's DNA. DiggerDick, I'm surprised you didn't catch that. The pellets mark the target with a synthetic DNA that can be analyzed later, and place a suspect at a scene, or not.

And theyeti, who is "they" when you say they have a riot situation in mind? This is a product at a trade show, the article doesn't mention it being in use anywhere. Riots do happen though, all around the world. We even had one in BC a couple of years ago.

You all do realize that this is just the 1st baby-step towards being able to "mark" all participants in a crowd/riot/demonstration and/or location, by simply adding DNA "markers" to the air?
All that are within proximity during the release of these markers and inhale will be easily identified at a latter date. Whether it be at an airport/border-crossing/any government facility or service office and one day, perhaps at all public train and bus stations.
It is just natural progression. First it was UPC strips on everything we purchased and correlated with our debit/credit card records, then "magnetic, anti-theft tracers" buried within our packages at any/all department stores that required demagnetizing at the cashier. Now facial recognition is used in many stores and malls, it is already in full use at Las Vegas casinos and has been for years.
How long before the next step is taken and you can be "marked" with any/every breath you take at any time, at any place? There is not even any legislation or "right to privacy" with regards to these situations.
