Military policing our streets

Post by SurplusElect »

New crime fighting vehicle in Kelowna

http://www.castanet.net/edition/news-st ... .htm#88789

It's called a Tactical Armoured Vehicle or TAV - and, it's the latest tool in the RCMP's crime fighting arsenal. The vehicles provide a 360 degree observation tower, advanced ballistic and explosive protection and have impressive off-road capabilities.

Who is lobbing grenades, launching RPG's and shooting at the police with .50 cal rounds?

Get this crap off our streets. Dress up like a chicken solider, and you will act like one.

They were training, not policing. The vehicle is for major incidents, i'm glad they got on. Don't take hostages or murder someone and you should be ok.

Either employ the military to police our streets or keep a CIVILIAN police force to deal with CIVILIANS.

Ask yourself - why is the military currently not policing our streets?

The vehicle is for major incidents

The RCMP being shelled with Hells Angels artillery? RPG fire?

I didn't read that the new equipment would be used policing the streets. It would be used by the ERT team from the sounds of it.

Have we ever had a single incident that would justify the use of this vehicle or are the police just wanting a new toy? It looks like a huge waste of money to me.

The RCMP use their helicopter to chase crackheads.

The minute there is even a slight excuse to break out their new toy, they will use it.

If they need a vehicle like that in a "hypothetical situation", the military should be called in (can only cite one time in North America where the police were outgunned and needed military assistance - North Hollywood Shooting).

The point is - the police are not soldiers, should not be trained like soldiers and should not have theater-of-war equipment to use on our civilian public streets.

This thread is nothing but fear mongering.

'Military policing our streets'. Phffft. There is no military policing our streets.

Perhaps the OP would feel better if cops showed up at volatile scenes in a soft top pink Cadillac. Oh heck, to make them less scary, we could have the ERT drive up on tricycles; that ought to calm people down.

#6 on the list I posted

6. Police in North Dakota borrowed a $154 million Predator drone from Homeland Security to arrest a family who refused to return six cows that wandered onto their farm.

Right, "fear mongering".

The only people mongering fear are the police saying they need military equipment.

Why do the police get a blank card that excuses everything they do? We don't need this vehicle and can't afford it. There is no reason for us to have it.

Just what we need our local bully-brigade to have.

"Look out Buddy, they beefed up the wagon!"

What a waste of money, time and resources.

Perhaps "they" know something we don't.
Perhaps they have a plan they are setting up to follow through on.
Perhaps Harper recognized how messed up things are about to get with his leadership at the helm.

Because it's not within the Canadian Armed Forces mandate to police our streets with the exception of "aid to the Civil Power" operations. Pretty basic really.

Exactly. The military is not equipped, nor should they be, to deal with policing a civilian population.

Why then are we training the police with military tactics and giving them military equipment?

If there is a "crisis", then call in the troops. We don't need a whole list of over-zealous police action "accidents" to outweigh the list of "hypothetical dangerous situations" that the police could find themselves in.
