A minor earthquake has struck off the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

Natural Resources Canada says a 4.7-magnitude quake hit around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The shock originated about 175 kilometres west of Port Hardy.

Natural Resources Canada said there were no reports of damage and that none would have been expected.

The ministry said the quake was not felt.

There has a couple small quakes in Mission area in Lower mainland: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... alse%7D%7D

May they not become bigger since the area and heading west is not bedrock, shaking would make similar to vibrating fresh pour concrete. Reason being Fraser River Delta is just sediment basically very similar to sand when a large quake happens.

Added later: I'm not fear mongering, I am just being realistic.

Quakes in or around hydro electric dams, don't turn out well for those down stream. Good thing this was small quake.

It was a massive quake because we felt it wayyy up in the North Okanagan.

For anyone living in or near BC south coast or American Pacific Northwest (along the coast from northern tip of Vancouver Island down to Northern California). Should be aware of this Cascadia Subduction Zone: https://pnsn.org/outreach/earthquakesources/csz

This area according to experts in Earthquake's say it long over due for a quake as big if not bigger then what hit japan on March 11, 2011 at Tōhoku.

Added: Those who get Knowledge Network tomorrow @ 6pm is interesting program called: Monster Quake: Are We Next?

As one Okanagan resident, home for 10 days from Fort McMurray, said: "Likely caused by fracking under the Pacific ocean".

Nope, try again.
Maybe checkout tectonic plate movement & northern point of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Added later: For those living on BC coast from just north of the Island down you will hearing more about this term Cascadia Subduction Zone if you have not already.

For whatever reason, your link isn't working. This one does: http://pnsn.org/outreach/earthquakesources/csz

They've been saying that since at least the 80's. The subduction zone, however, is on the west side of vancouver island. The lower mainland will most likely be dealing with water swelling more than earth shaking.

Somebody said something about there being no bedrock on the west coast. I think they haven't seen the mountains and hills that are down here. I'd hate to be in Richmond when the big one hit, but Mission or Abbotsford would be just fine. New West and Burnaby are, for the most part, built on bedrock (Queensborough notwithstanding, it can slide into the water along with Richmond for all that it matters).

As for why one might feel a quake all the way up in Kelowna? Simply put, the Okanagan sits right above a fault line that's directly linked with with the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Couple that with the vast majority of downtown-area kelowna having an incredibly high water table - it makes me glad I'm living on Bedrock.

Area of most concern would all along Fraser river delta (Vancouver airport inland east) area built up by river sediment (in a quake turns into quicksand). North of the airport should be okay (with the exceptions of older brick structures).
Experts are predicting 9+ quake, it all depends on type & location. What kind of damage will happen in Victoria & lower mainland.

So - Richmond, Delta and South Surrey. Aside from the airport, I don't see the downside.

Maybe a little off-kilter, but sarcasm nonetheless. Spend a few weeks in Richmond, you might even become just as sarcastic about it.
