Gang boss sues over attack

The former leader of Vernon's notorious Greek drug gang is suing the federal government and another inmate over a violent prison assault against him two years ago.

Lawyers for Peter Manolakos filed a notice of civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court on Feb. 28, naming the Queen, the Attorney General of Canada and inmate Murray Poorman as defendants in the case.

Manolakos, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder and manslaughter, is seeking financial damages for the March 5, 2015, attack in a cell at Kent Institution in Agassiz.

I keep picturing the Queen reading this, making a trip to see him, walking in the cell, smacking him upside the head and saying, "We are not amused!" And then walking away. I wish I could make that happen.

If events unfolded as Mr. Manolakos says, then prison staff were not just negligent, but may have even set him up. It's been known to happen. He may actually have a case here.

On one hand, it's not right that things like this are allowed to happen, especially if prison staff are creating these situations. They do have a responsibility to the inmates in their charge. Unfortunately, very few incarcerated persons will get any sympathy from the public for whatever might befall them in custody. There won't be an outcry, even over outright abuse.

Please don't take the above to mean that I sympathize with Mr. Manolakos; quite the opposite. I went to high school with one of the people he's accused of murdering. But I'm interested to see if this gets any traction.
