After setting up a decently equipped brand new Lenovo PC (i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, etc.) with only a standard disk. I'm now recommending that people consider a SSD as "Mandatory" when purchasing a PC. Even if it's just an inexpensive $75 128GB primary disk for OS and APPS only.

The SSD makes a huge difference with regard to performance of the PC. Even if you're looking for a budget PC, it's worth the extra few $$. That brand new PC was actually slower than my 5yo PC with a SSD. And my PC wasn't anything fancy when I bought it.

An SSD will also add at least a year or 2 to the lifespan of your computer. Doesn't need to be anything fancy, doesn't need to be all that large (get a 2nd disk for storing your data). You don't need intel's fancy new optane memory, or an opal drive, or an M.2 SSD (all examples of high-performance variants of SSDs) just a standard SSD is all it takes to see a huge jump in performance. You will not regret it!

Completely agree.
250GB is around the $100 mark. Marginally more than a platter based drive. Don't know why computer makers still charge a premium to include a SSD. Cheaper to put one in yourself perhaps. I've never filled more than 200G so it is all I need.

Always backup. HDD sometimes you are lucky enough to pull your data off a failing drive. SDD is dead with no chance. backup backup backup. Iv seen a few fail already.

It depends on how important your info is to you.
My pictures are the most important to me and I have several backups.
They are on 3-4 different computers and several external HDs.

I think SDD was a typo.

Each person has their own comfort level but I'd say minimum one backup at home, one off site, and the possibly most important, one to a device that is not connected to your network, as in a large removable flash drive which you back up to once a day, or whatever frequency your situation requires.

The reason the removable one is so important is because of the ransomware out there. Some of that stuff is so nasty that even experienced techs can't do anything with it, and if it's one of the nastier ones it can affect anything connected to your network.

When you have your precious data on a removable device, the computer can be reformatted and your data put back on it, as opposed to paying the crooks, in the hopes that they do give you the encryption key to get your data back.

How many backups...i have a backup and 2 backsup of that one...in different locations
