How much did all that food plus the beer weigh? Keep in mind beer is what, about 2 pounds per quart. If there was a bunch of salt in it, your body has to retain a lot of water to go with the salt.

If you eat a pound of pizza crust (dryweight), your body needs to retain about four times that in fluid to store it.

Here's what works for me...!

I've had to watch my weight my whole life -- my pattern has been slow weight gain until I'm facing an increase in pant size from 36 to 38. Don't want to go there. So I go on a diet, that usually lasts about six months.

It's moderately easy -- no desert, no snacking, and no alcohol. Multi-grain bread, very little margarine and sugary spreads, coffee black and no sugar. As much lean meat and vegies as I want. A bowl of dry popcorn in the evenings -- the roughage and fibre in it keeps you regular, too. A big bowl of dry popcorn is the approximate equivalent of eating a wicker coffee table. :200:

The first three or four days are the worst, until my system adjusts and gets used to what's 'coming down the chute'. I can fall off the diet maybe once a month for very special occasions, but once the mindset is there, I pretty much stick with it. And the weight ever so slowly, falls away.

An important milestone in the diet, is changing to size 34 pants from 36. Then when the size 34 pants are getting loose (165-ish lbs...) , I go back to normal eating. One to two years later, it's time to start again. Health professionals say this isn't the best, but now in my mid-60's, it has worked for me, my entire adult life.

So starting now I get serious.

It was torture. Fifteen minutes of jogging around the track - is torture for a fat guy.
I did half hour minimum of exercise each day, even if it's just walking or riding my bike slowly,
it's still exercise.

that's success. One of the good things about having success, is you can tell your fat friends how to do it.

If you want to start running for exercise Thinktank, I would recommend some sort of program. Recently I got back into the couch to 5k program. If you have a smartphone you can download the app, or you can find one online and time yourself. It is an 8 week program, 3 days a week. They slowly start getting you into running more and getting your endurance up to where you'll be able to run 5k (but really it is just 30 minutes of running straight). It worked really well for me, and now I run 5k+ a couple times a week.

Not sure why the torture - obese people are advised to start with a schedule and work up to jogging and take alternate with walking and jogging.

Pump Up the Pace

When you can walk briskly for an hour, you're likely ready to add in some running without straining your joints or cardiovascular system. Walk normally to warm up for at least five minutes, then jog for 30 seconds. Walk for two minutes, then jog for 30 seconds. Continue this for the rest of your 60-minute walk. About twice a week, increase this time to 45 seconds of running for every two minutes of walking, then 60 seconds. When you hit the point that you're jogging for two minutes and walking for two minutes, tip the scales in the other direction by decreasing how much you walk by how much you run. For example, when you run for two minutes and 15 seconds, walk for one minute and 45 seconds. Continue until you're jogging the entire time, then increase your speed until you're running the route

Experienced runners advised me to do the 30 second jog and then walk briskly for 2 minutes so this isn't off the mark.

Nope. Running is hard. I'm trying to do it as easy as possible.

I'm now up to jogging four laps around the track, resting several times
I do 100 jumping jacks four times a day

Breakfast: oatmeal most of the time. Sometimes boiled egg. Other meals, I just try eat less. Never two full heaping plates like I used to do at Mama Pandas. In fact, I don't like buffets anymore. They seem like a weird concept. So, 3/4 of a plate of meat, vegetables. Really small amounts of rice. Spaghetti sometimes too. And I drink enough water.

On April 2, I was 212, now - 207.

But what about my two really fat brothers, and two morbidly morbidly obese friends? I can tell them exactly what to do, but will they do it?

I do 100 of these, four times a day. Anyone can do it.
Even if you just jump a little bit, you can still move your arms a hundred times.

Re running, if you're just doing it to lose weight, you can achieve the same by walking. You do burn more calories running than you do walking, but if you just walk a bit further, you'll burn the same. Running of course is a better 'cardio workout' than just walking. But walking is for many folks, a more pleasant experience. I ran consistently from my 20's into my early 50's, and packed it in for walking. I have several buddies who were athletes their whole lives -- into their 50's and 60's -- but are now having hip and knee replacements.

The difference between running and walking up a hill is discouragingly small. I find, however, that interval training is the most effective approach. My resting heart rate has improved, considerably.

As with all new fitness regimes, consult with a physician before beginning a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program.

Edited to add: Yes, there are apps for that: I've used Runkeeper and iSmoothRun.

That's not good.

Us poor Canadians. What did we ever do to deserve this, where we have to work
like crazy just to lose five lbs?

so I walked up Giant's Head Mountain. 1 hr 20 minutes, up and down.

Has nothing to do with being Canadian but everything to do with eating properly and exercising on a regular basis.

I don't know why you think a running program would make it hard. If anything I found it even easier. I was more motivated to get out and run because I had a set program (3 days a week), and I wasn't as discouraged because it slowly built up my running time over the course of 8 weeks.

Not saying you have to use a running program, but just recommending it. Running is hard, and it can be really easy to injure yourself (with improper shoes, form and even pushing yourself too far, not enough time to recover etc). Working with a running coach, or using a program that was made by people who know what they are doing are great ways to increase your endurance, while avoiding injury.

Too bad you didn't post your own photo. Should give the photographer credit as it is copyrighted. Next time take at least a cell phone. There's apps to track your route and time.
