Yes, there's some discrepancy between the first statement in that quote, and the last. Ultimately, it seems a very large number of people felt this would be a very good initiative. Expecting unanimity around it seems counterproductive.

Let's hope they're able to come forward with an even better idea, very soon.

The initiative wasn't supported by Trudeau because it was proposed by a Conservative, MP Mike Lake. It goes no deeper than that. A shallow decision by a shallow man.

That's certainly how it looks. If it's not the case, one wonders why he's not explaining. People affected by this decision deserve better.
