I guess art is truly in eye of the beholder, in my eyes this looks like building destruction still being worked on. lol
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

Re: Art or Junk?
I personally don't like it, but I am sure there is some sort of meaning and metaphor in there somewhere lol.
Anyways, I would have much rather seen the investment of art go into a local, or at least Canadian, artist.

If i remember correctly they hired someone from the US for this mess.
If they were hellbent on putting art there they should've got the first nation people to design and build it.

Hmm beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. Because the panel was obviously drunk when they voted for this piece of junk.
Sculptures like this are priceless and I wonder in awe how it was crafted.
The thread "sculpture" I'm thinking how do you even survive and where did you get your welding ticket

I think it has all the beauty of a building after a horrible earthquake.

I think it's Art. It's ugly art. And definitely not worth $500,000. Whoever chose it, should probably not be on their Art Committee in future.

I would bet I could find something equal to or better than this at Chernoble.

I think the debate shouldn't be about whether the art is good or not, to each their own. But if you have a panel of folks deciding for a large group of people, they should be a representation of the population they represent and you get what you get and you don't get upset.

As well as why did they not have this done by a Canadian Artist? Aboriginal or otherwise but at least a Canadian!
For this location I think a First Nation artist would be better served.

Re: Art or Junk?
Again, my argument isn't about the legitimacy of the work or the artist. It is entirely an issue of who you hire to represent you (paid or unpaid). The group/panel who are entrusted to make the decisions needs to first have an agreed upon mandate such as what does the work represent, or what kinds of mediums are they considering, where the artists come from and all that. Once the guidelines are decided upon and the group represents the people of the community, the rest is a subjective reality.

I get what you're saying, though slight difference. Art is for sure subjective and there is, and isn't debate there. If this piece was say $5000, maybe 10 thousand? Ya with you all the way.
For $500,000?
I expect Michelangelo's David or something par with the dedication, perseverance and skills in decades perfecting.
Not something I could throw together in my garage over the course of a few evenings with scrap steel and rocks.
I think that's the debate for $500,000.
