I need storage!
I have exhausted my external storage, it's time for a new one.
I'm looking for some 'good value' recommendations. I'm working with NEF and/or DNG files that can exceed 250MB.

Perhaps a network attached storage unit? Plug in the drives you want. What kind and size of ‘external’ storage do you have right now?

Re: I need storage!
I just filled a 250GB external hard drive. I like the portability to work on files wherever I sign in to Adobe CC. I'm avoiding purchasing Adobe cloud storage because I don't know enough about it just yet, but I'm not going to rule it out.

So you need something portable. Just larger perhaps and USB? Or SATA?

Staples has a 2T drive for around $100.00 so that would be approx 8 times bigger than what you just filled.
Don't rule out cloud storage thats free for keeping the files you are presently working on and have access from anywhere you have an internet connection and on any device.
Dropbox, Onedrive, Google drive. They can be very handy and you don't have to carry the external drive with you.

Portable is good, and my current is a USB.
Until about half an hour ago, my first priority was going to be getting an internal SSD and learn how to move my OS & Programs over to it, then I was going to only run active files from it, and move them over to the internal HDD, back up to the external. All JPEG photos would further land in my Amazon Prime unlimited photo storage. Call me thrifty.
It wasn't until I began playing around with photomerging 6-9 NEF files, that replacing the external storage became the priority.
Bsuds wrote:How big is your present drive and how many files are on it, then decide how many more files you want to store. That would give you an idea of how big a drive you might need.
How many more I need will depend on mannnny things that could change rather quickly.
The exhausted 250GB contain our computer data backups and around 160GB of JPG and NEF files, the latter being accumulated over three camera bodies and ten years. The most recent camera (1.5 yrs ago) produces 30-40MB files depending on what I'm shooting, and its predecessor produces 10-15MB files.
I could easily justify having two: a personal drive and a paid-work drive.
There will be sacrifices... I want a light meter, a 180mm f/2.8, and gosh, I could sure use a 600Ws strobe (two would be better), and a graduated ND filter kit.... but I neeeeed a new tripod....
Wait a minute... where was I? STORAGE.... back to storage....

Can't you use that for your cloud storage?

I feel your pain. As a Nikon shooter who saves in TIFF after editing the NEF files, - space can fill quickly.
A weekend shoot of waterfalls and landscapes easily can take 32 to 64 G.
250Mb - way too small.
I have a QNAP 2TB setup as a server for my home PC's.
Even that is getting a bit small.
But have 2 ea 6TB WD USB3 drives that I use for offsite backup.
The 6TB from Best Buy cost me $273.18 each.
Go big and you don't have to go home.
The higher MP camera you have the faster it will fill.
Space these days is really cheap compared to the "old days"....

No kidding, right! Event shooting is no different, except more important than my personal fun work, all those files need backups of backups.NotNorthAnymore wrote:A weekend shoot of waterfalls and landscapes easily can take 32 to 64 G.
Do you keep one drive for personal and one for paid?NotNorthAnymore wrote:Go big and you don't have to go home.
Here's another question, do larger storage devices fail at the same, less, or greater rate?
