SCC to rule on ski resort
The Supreme Court of Canada is due to release a decision Thursday in a case that hinges on freedom of religion and how Indigenous spirituality should be protected under the Charter of Rights.
The Ktunaxa Nation appealed to Canada's highest court after courts in British Columbia refused to stop a proposed ski resort at the foot of Jumbo Mountain and Jumbo Glacier, 55 kilometres west of Invermere in southeastern B.C.
The Ktunaxa consider the land sacred and say construction of the resort would interfere with religious practices involving the spirit of the grizzly bear.

Looks like they lost another one.

Approval of a ski resort in a region held sacred by Indigenous people does not violate their constitutional right to freedom of religion, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled Thursday.
The high court decision means the proposed resort development in southeastern British Columbia is a step closer to reality.
The Ktunaxa Nation consider the land at the foot of Jumbo Mountain to be sacred and say construction of the resort would drive away Grizzly Bear Spirit, a principal figure of their religious beliefs, from an area known as Qat'muk.

Just more proof that Canada's justice system is broken. That phony 'resort town', another nightmare courtesy of 'Wild Bill' Bennett, shouldn't have even been considered in the first place. And it wouldn't have been if we'd had an honest government at the time of its conception.

NOT ruling this way would have set a dangerous precedent.
Sorry MJ, if it didn't go the way you expected or hoped, but the Supreme Court has to keep precedent in mind and protecting the spirit of any animal to one core geographical area would then have to be applied everywhere.

As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

Thank you for providing this link. There's much more opposition to this resort than the First Nations challenge. There's still the BC Liberal government's underhanded method of trying to create a municipality out of thin air. (Pun intended)

As the old adage goes......."Build it and they will come". Great way to put some money into the pockets of the locals including the natives.

Does this mean that you're okay with the previous government's deceitful and dishonest ways of getting what they wanted?

I really wasn't a fan of the dishonest and deceitful ways of the NDP in the 1990's. That backroom deal that Dix did with the BCTF should have landed him in jail. As for this topic - I agree. Build away.

Thank you Bill Bennett for providing us with this resort town. Great idea and good for BC. I wish that we could clone that guy and eradicate the diseased dishonest NDP from the BC political landscape for decades to come.

Proof that the justice system isn't as broken as I had thought. Good on the Supreme Court of Canada. I may just have to celebrate.
