Alberta Plates - not if you want to work in Saskatchewan

Post by oneh2obabe »

Alberta plates no longer allowed on Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure job sites.

On Wednesday, the province announced that vehicles displaying Alberta plates will no longer be allowed on job sites for Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure’s new projects.

Alberta threatens lawsuit after Saskatchewan bans Alberta licence plates on job sites.

Alberta says Saskatchewan has one week to revoke its ban on Alberta licence plates at Saskatchewan job sites or face court action under free trade rules.

It sounds stupid until they note it is response to Alberta doing the same thing.

It's an image issue though. What reporting and comments do you think if there was an infrastructure project that stated "Brought to you by the Federal Government of Canada" and the vehicles you saw there were all from Oregon USA?

Keep in mind this only applies to provincial government contracts not actual employment in general.

I would think Canadian employment is Canadian employment and what happened to the "best for the job?"

And what if a SK person is borrowing their buddies vehicle and that vehicle happens to have AB plates?

And what if all the qualified SK workers are out on contract and an Albertan can happen to fill the job?

This all seems a little over the top, no?

Sask workers have long worked all over alberta. This policy will be short lived . Brad Wall can do a lot better than this. Shameful policy for him to implement. Alberta and Saskatchewan are kissing cousins . Look at Lloydminster. The two provinces share it .

Can not believe the government of Saskatchewan would do this
Now they want to take our guns away . That would be just fine. Take em away from the criminals first . Ill gladly give u mine. "Charlie Daniels"

Having worked on roads in both Alberta and Sask I am not sure if this is a license registration thing. If your on a job after so many days your to get plates for that province (no body dose unless they get stopped). The other thing is the bigger contractors work in all 3 western provinces and move highly skilled operators and supervision around this will cause problems with locals.

Yep. When i was on a road marking crew. We worked out of Edmonton. Did a pile of work east of Lloyd. All the way down to Regina.

The great licence plate fight between Alberta and Saskatchewan may be escalating into a much larger conflict.

Alberta Economic Development Minister Deron Bilous says there will be — in his words — "consequences" if Saskatchewan does not roll back its ban on Alberta licence plates on its job sites.

Bilous says Saskatchewan has six days to end the ban or face a lawsuit on the grounds it is violating free trade rules.

In the meantime, Bilous said Alberta will consider other retaliatory measures but declined to be more specific.

Saskatchewan's Infrastructure Minister David Marit says the ban was imposed because Alberta has similar rules for Saskatchewan contractors and Alberta contractors have an unfair advantage because they don't pay a provincial sales tax.

Bilous says Alberta does not have rules mandating Saskatchewan workers have Alberta plates, and he says the Saskatchewan government is not returning his calls to discuss the issue.

Sounds like a simple issue. Get rid of the pst saskatchewan.

The guy litterally says. We tax the snot out of our businesses. So they ca not compete. Now we want to punish Albertans because they have historically had a well run province and avoided over taxation.

Way to take a page out of the NDP playbook brad wall

What the contractors did do is rent equipment from themselves and pay pst on the rent this makes it unfair for local contractors who buy the equipment and have to pay full PST so my guess is this is about keeping contractors out of Sask.
