Good news for the locals there worried about destruction of their land

How many years will it take Brian Battison to stop banging his head against this particular brick wall? My guess is around the same time as Taseko declares bankruptcy, which shouldn't be much longer. Even mining companies with deep pockets run out of litigation funds eventually.

The rejection of the New Prosperity mine has been blamed on NYMBY's. That is not the case. It was rejected twice by the Federal government (at that time a Conservative government) for poor environmental design. The company said that a "special liner" for its gigantic tailings pond would make the project safe and environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, liners tend to leak over time and are almost impossible to repair when they begin to leak.

Here is another example of a company wishing to use old technology and processes to maximize its profits are the expense of the environment. If the company had proposed a tailings solidification process, then that might have made a difference in the approval process.

It is high time that mining companies realized that improved technology will increase their chances of resource development in areas where the environment is relatively pristine.

I've known Irvin for over 30 years.

For 22 of those years he was the Chief, and then one day he gets the boot by the band (and thus losing his lucrative salary), then his white eco-friendly wife of 40 years leaves him, and the next day he's suddenly gone from being opposed to mining to demanding the band look for jobs for their members who don't make up the only good paying jobs in town (Chief and Council).

The Tsilhqot’in are a proud people. We have been leaders not only for our own people, but for other aboriginal nations here in B.C. and across the country.

We were the first people in Canada to have ever proven aboriginal title. It took years of effort and perseverance but we did it. And our title victory has been a victory for First Nations everywhere.

Never before in our long history have the Tsilhqot’in people ever been more in charge of their destiny than they are now.

But what choices will we make to shape that destiny?

One of our choices should be to end the dispute between the Tsilhqot’in and Taseko Mines. Let’s end it, but let’s end it on our terms.

I believe that the gold and copper at Fish Lake belongs to us, belong to the Tsilhqot’in Nation. So let’s use it. Let’s use those minerals to shape our destiny in a way that makes the most sense to us.

Leadership is about improving the lives of our people and the children still to come. And it’s about finding a way forward on our terms, consistent with our values and traditions.

Leadership is about making our community self-sufficient not relying on government hand outs. Time to walk away from the Indian Act which determines our destiny.

Time to grasp an opportunity that may be once in a lifetime.

Independence, healthy environments and communities only happen with a strong economy created by strong leadership with open public input from all community members.

Working together with our neighbours makes us all united and shows our human side caring for all.

Most of you seem to unaware of some details.

There is a history between Taseko mines and those communities.
