New firehall for Glenmore

Glenmore will get a new firehall.

The issues remain where, and when.

An analysis of firefighting needs in Kelowna, produced by Darkhorse​ ​Analytics, is at odds with a preferred location outlined a year ago by the Kelowna Fire Department.

The analysis, which will be presented to city council Monday afternoon, suggests the best place for a future new hall is in the densely-populated Glenmore and Watson Road area.

The fire department originally suggested placing a new firehall closer to area around John Hindle Drive.

I watched over the last month while new fencing went up around the Glenmore Sportsfield next to the Scenic Road Fire Hall.
Word is this Firehall will be torn down to return it to farmland and have the sports field returned to farmland.
So now they don't know where to place the replacement Firehall.

What are they going to do,occupy the Watson Road school playground? If the majority of the calls are medical in nature, maybe what is needed is an ambulance station at the intersection of Union Road and Glenmore, there are a vacant lots just sitting there.

This is what happens when you get a bunch of hay seeds on city council who have no vision for the future. When Glenmore Lands were released from the ALR in the 1990's it was mostly set aside for housing.
Too little land was set aside for commercial and community purposes.
The Agricultural Land Commission does not care that communities are contorted by having to work around an unelected bureaucracy.

I'm sure the Fire Department likes the new build idea.

My first thought is, can this not be pulled from the ALR. The second thought is, who in the City gave it the stamp of approval when this land was transformed from farm land to park and essential service, did they not know at the time it was ALR land??

No surprises in this City, they just do as they please, although if you try and use your land for other then farming look out!

That lot is closer to Kane Rd and the Shopping Centre than it is to Watson Rd in terms of development and orientation if you are talking about the lot beside GEID.
In terms of long term planning, the city has no where to go but north along the Glenmore Valley and into the hills. Commercial development is pushing north to the airport and the Glenmore Valley is developing due to it's close proximity to that commercial development. In this case it does not make sense to favour development in the Mission. Living close to where you work is highly desireable particularly where there is favourable transit.
ALC policies have pushed housing into the hills and the few available flat easily accessible lots are scarce.
The present Scenic Rd Firehall location is well situated within the Glenmore Valley. Like the rest of the Valley Road N - Sexsmith community, it has great access in 6 cardinal directions to service those in need. I just don't understand the decision to close the Firehall and the adjacent park to return it to farmland.

Never mind that down the road it'll likely get allowed out of the ALR and the new owner will benefit the most by turning it into a subdivision.

Seen that happen plenty enough times.

Old Japanese farmer used to have a ten acre cherry orchard by the bench in Rutland and when he got to be in his 90's with no one to pass the farm on to, he wanted to subdivide and keep the house he'd lived in all his life.

He was refused. Drive by there now and there's zero sign an orchard ever existed as it's all developed, and that within about five years of his demise.

Seems a bit asinine that they can't make an exception for a firehall that's already in place. I guess that would be just too much common sense in play.

They are returning it to ALR because they took out the new sports fields (valley and Cross)from the ALR and need to put something back in (IE. the firehall and current sports fields

Did you know that the fields they are returning to ALR are baseball diamonds and the new ones are soccer fields. Like every school in Glenmore doesn't already have soccer fields. We are losing Glenmore only dedicated baseball/softball diamonds.

Nothing like frittering away tax dollars to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place.

With John Hindle Drive in the works, and growth moving towards the university all around, it makes more sense to me for the fire hall to be where it is, as opposed to moving it the opposite direction.

The Scenic Road Firehall is a significant structure, likely worth millions to replace. What are these people thinking?
Do we actually pay them to come up with these decisions?
