Is art native enough?

And would they not be black and white?
Who is going to "get" the colours on that thing?

It looks like a hand with too many fingers flipping the bird to me. I see nothing resembling an orca. And why does art have to be native enough?

WalterWhite wrote:Haha! Just finished reading that story, ^^ and the first thing that came to my mind was people are going to be looking for the paddle board rental kiosk. The second thought was, if an artist requires a plaque or some other form of explaining what the piece is supposed to represent - then they've missed their mark.

First thought I had was if that's supposed to represent an Orca, it must be one that's starving to death.

I think Victoria just beat Kelowna in the most useless public art competition.

Though it's obviously been years now, whenever I drive past the dolphins, I wonder how many tourists wandering along the lakeshore are looking for dolphins.

That thing simply doesn't represent Kelowna as far as I'm concerned, not any more than that frayed stainless steel railroad track on stilts, at the entrance to the bridge does.

At least the wire bear is representative of this region, as are the sails and Ogopogo.

OT, you mean all the bears that are relocated destroyed around Kelowna? I see you nailed the Dolphins. I give Geert Maas kudos for the fat sunbathers at Tug Boat Bay beach.

Omigod, JLives you're right. That's exactly what it looks like. I'm not sure, was FN funds funding the installation? Is this their final choice? I hope not.

What a crock.
Who says any public art has to be native.
How about Chinese, they did more work on our railway system than the natives ever did on anything.

Just because you do not understand or appreciate art does not mean it is not beautiful or worth the money we paid for it.
I think the bear installation looks great. There are always people around it and taking pictures of it and selfies of it with themselves in the foreground.
Maybe you just don't appreciate the art. And that is fine. I might not appreciate what you consider art either. And that also is OK.

Art is not meant to be populist.

Art is a wonderful addition to a city. We need to foster wonder and creativity. I just think it should be kept local. I don't like farming it out to people who aren't part of our community.

It does look like Orcas, if Orcas swim at a 45 degree angle, and come in many colors..
The red piece with the structural steel by the bridge, is not art, its a public coffer drain...

The chunks of beams by our bridge at least came from the old bridge, pays homage....significance.
It at least has a meaning to it....

I personaly like it..The History buff in me...

The Bear, I like it too, not $80,000.00 like, but like just the same.

As for the Paddleboard Rental Kiosk mentioned before.....nailed it......

Could likely splash some black and white barn paint on èm and get a pass....

Yes and when in a public sense, represent something local, in a fashion that doesn't require a five hundred word explanatory plaque.

Then let the minority who appreciate this junk pay for it.

It's appalling. Horrendous. The arty minority don't even have a clue what's creative, beautiful, and appropriate.

Awww, Lightspeed, so the modern art installation planned for your front lawn as your Christmas prezzie should be cancelled? :135:

The big carved cedar grizzly bear can stay. I like that vibe.

The modern art carbuncle made from a stack of discarded WalMart carts can go to UBCO. The millennials will love that junk.
