Minimum wage

Post by smoky500 »

I would tend to agree with these comments, same future/fate for workers in B.C.

None of this should come as a surprise. The minimum wage is one of the most-studied topics in economics, and the consensus view of the research is clear: Raising the minimum wage reduces job opportunities. A summary published in late 2015 by Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco put it this way:

Recent research using a wider variety of methods to address the problem of comparison states tends to confirm earlier findings of job loss. Coupled with critiques of the methods that generate little evidence of job loss, the overall body of recent evidence suggests that the most credible conclusion is a higher minimum wage results in some job loss for the least-skilled workers—with possibly larger adverse effects than earlier research suggested.

If anyone has any doubts about what most likely will happen, just look at Denmark. They have a minimum wage of 24$ an hour and while they are the happiest country on earth (on average) they also pay the highest taxes at an average of 40%, 60% for anyone that makes over $55k. To give you a comparison I pay about 28% in taxes with a 50k+ salary. In California people that make over 400,000$ pay 40% in taxes and that's the highest tax rate in all of the USA. In the USA A vw GOLF cost about 22,000, In Denmark its over 40,000 And they pay almost double than what the USA pays for most regular grocery items.

So I ask you the public, Is this really what you want?

That article is almost 3 years old now. Here are some articles done in 2017

https://wageindicator.org/main/salary/m ... ge/denmark
https://www.minimum-wage.org/international/denmark

They have a sliding scale minimum wage based on three factors. The average minimum wage is about 20-21$ an hour but can be as high as 24$ depending on, Career sector, AGE and Experience.

Just the way I'm wired...

Every time Minimum wage goes up, and I myself do not get a raise It
feels as if I'm getting ripped off.

Pretty soon I'll be back to Minimum wage myself !!!

Thanks for the update. Simply stating that the minimum wage is $24 was misleading. If you are experienced and in a field that requires a level of expertise, then of course you earn more, as the free market already does here. Entry level employess will not get $24/hour, so it is not a true minimum wage.

I assume that when the calculations are done correctly that it will likely be less than that - still higher than here though. When you factor in the higher cost of living there, it likely works out to be less though when compared to Canada.

I still prefer the Australian system which is often misrepresented to be around $17/hour. I can't remember the details as I've looked it up and shown it here numerous times and won't do it again now. It is a sliding scale based on age. For younger kids (ie: still living at home), the wage is less than here. As employees get older, the wage increases so that when you are in your 20s, you get a more or less liveable wage. It is not a perfect system, but a bit better than what we have here now......

I wish I had the answer to this, but I don't think anyone does, or ever will :)

Research Shows Minimum Wage Increases Do Not Cause Job Loss

Many economists have backed away from the argument that minimum wage [laws] lead to fewer jobs.

Many critics think that raising the minimum wage will hurt precisely those workers that this policy is designed to help because firms will lay off workers to save on labor costs. Raising the minimum wage, critics argue, will create more unemployment and more reliance on public assistance. But there is no evidence to support this claim

It's one of the oldest and fiercest debates in economics: Does raising the minimum wage increase unemployment, by making it more expensive for employers to hire extra workers?

One way to look at the issue is to compare unemployment and minimum wage rates over time. If minimum wage rises reduce the number of jobs created, then you should be able to see a correlation between the two.

In fact, British wage and unemployment data appear to show that a doubling of the minimum wage over the last 17 years has had no obvious effect on unemployment. The UK currently has the lowest ever unemployment and the highest ever minimum wage.

n a first-of-its-kind study, economist William Lester from the University of North Carolina, in cooperation with researchers from the National Employment Law Project, pored over employment data from every federal increase since the minimum wage was first established, making “simple before-and-after comparisons of job growth trends twelve months after each minimum-wage increase.” And the paper’s title says it all: “Raise Wages, Kill Jobs? Seven Decades of Historical Data Finds No Correlation Between Minimum Wage Increases and Employment Levels.”

I read an article once about paramedics riding a city bus all night because they couldn’t afford rent.
