My opinion of Big retail stores closing up.

1. A packed doesn't mean a profitable mall. Most malls make their profit between Friday and Sunday, the rest of the week they are slow. So look at google analytics to see how actually busy a mall is on average.
2. When large anchor tenants leave it puts undue stress on the smaller shops as they have to now brand themselves more to bring people to the mall. This is an added cost which the larger retailers absorb.
3. Long term leases with the large anchor tenants help keep malls open as it makes sure they are steady for years to come.
4. With younger people looking for "events and experiences" malls need to invest to drive people in (think Sherway Gardens, Yorkdale and Eaton Center) all had 100 million+ renovations to drive traffic.
5. Always view what people are carrying, you could go for a walk in the mall and not buy anything. Those stores are paying a premium to be in that location, so if customers are not buying, they will not be there long.

Larger cities will always have the advantage of numbers, with more people in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, etc they can always count on a portion of business. If you compare cities the size of Kelowna to other centers in the US and Canada, you will indeed see malls starting to be stressed, or closing.

Haha I'm probably one of the most positive people out there, but with the number of jobs that malls provide it is scary to think about even a 10% reduction not affecting lifestyle and small town life. These are jobs that students, young adults and people start with and sometimes make careers out of.

Hopefully the old is replaced with something new, maybe a new concept or idea will take root, but right now I can't think of what else you can turn a mall into.

Clothing manufacturers found out they needed a way to get rid of stock that might have been good quality, but just didn't go over very well, so the outlet mall was invented.

You learn something new every day. Outlet malls are a scam. I kind of knew something was wrong, the stuff in the outlet mall I was at just didn't look right, and now I know it was inferior quality.

You learn something new every day. Outlet malls are a scam. I kind of knew something was wrong, the stuff in the outlet mall I was at just didn't look right, and now I know it was inferior quality.

My inner gut tells me you couldn't tell the difference between corduroy and denim let alone a Ralph Lauren sweater from a retail store vs. one from an outlet mall

I have purchased Sketchers at an outlet Mall in the US as well and they were cheaper than the same shoe here including my employee discount. (which was 10% over cost)

Well ya. In Canada. 75 percent of the cost of everything is hidden taxes . Highest taxes on goods anywhere outside of Europe.

Just buying something "On Sale" in any store in USA is always better than anything you get in Canada.


If you want to buy stuff, go ahead. But it's never packed with people because the deals are just normal - not super.
And the products are slightly inferior.

That looks like the one I was at in Vegas. It was fairly busy when I was there but still easy to get around. I didn't see any big special deals there, after exchange things were slightly less than buying in Canada.

That is the North End Outlet in Vegas. There is also one on the south end, but its indoors and not nearly as nice.

Defeniteley good deals to be had there. I picked up a Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Diver for $150US at the North Outlet Vegas mall, with the exchange at the time it came to about $220CAD. It normally sells for $395CAD, but is currently on sale at WatchIt! for $276CAD. An associate of mine picked up a Michael Kors bag for his wife when we were there the other week, $200CAD for the same bag that was selling in Edmonton for $385. My Sketchers that I bought at the outlet mall in Phoenix the day before, I paid $90CAD for 2 pairs - the more expensive of the two was retailing for $125CAD (just the one pair) in Canada.

If you really want good deals next time anyone is in Vegas, head to Macy's in the Fashion Mall on the Strip, just across from The Wynn - really nice Tommy Bahama or Calvin Klein dress shirts for under $20US. Ralph Lauren, Boss, IZOD - all great prices.

Room and Spaces - opened end of August and given notice in November. Not a good track record.
