Gardening 2018

Post by Lady tehMa »

What plans do you have for the year?

I was given a hoop-house for Christmas, so I think I will start with that this year. Although I'm not entirely sure what to plant. Suggestions?

I was also given a garden journal and a book on when to plant.

I didn't see one for Penticton on the list, it could be that perhaps it hasn't been planned yet?

Gonna grow some more ginger this year. Have had asparagus growimg on a window sill for 2 years. This being the third year i will plant them outside. Planted some garlic before it snowed.
Gonna grow another jalepeno crop.
Been eating home made hot sauce for 3 months already. So easy. So tasty.
Been stockpiling dirt. Gonna make all my gardens deeper this spring.
Strawberry patch was looking good before the snow flew.
Probably gonna start some stuff inside in febuary or march.

I'll be doing my usual nonsense, too much of everything.
This will be the first pressing of the pinot noir this year.
I may put in a batch of one of the jersey varieties of asparagus in a spot that I've determined ideal for it.

And I'll continue to be in my perpetual search of the perfect tomatoe.
I've been searching forever. I'm good at growing them, I just want particular attributes that I just can't find.
Maybe those attributes aren't even in a tomatoe.

I picked strawberries last year till the end of november.

Another 8 weeks or so and all this nonsense is over.
Doesn't sound too long away when ya say it like that.

This year I'm going to forgo peppers and go with more cool plants, like cukes and peas.

My raised beds are freed up from too many June Bearing strawberries and I plan to see what Slootman buys so I can trade seeds.

Slootman, you game?

I haven't, but don't they need high heat? Or is there a variety that tolerates our zone? :135:

They are grown at vernon apparently. At least u can get seeds that are sold as being from vernon. Called virginia peanuts or something like that i believe.
They are supposedly easily grown in sand. Witch i have lots of. But i tried last year and it didnt work out

My Dad did, he even got his picture in the news paper for it. That was back when Jimmy Carter was president.

I tried last year but they never grew. I'll have to try again this year. I wonder if they do well in containers.

I need to get my gardens back up and going. We built a new garage late 2016 where our raised beds were. I need to get my raised beds put back together. I also need to re-landscape my back yard since the construction. Between running my business and then my injury nothing got done last year. This year I will have a lot more time to get out in my yard.

I have.
They're a legume.

Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer.
Not that it means anything. Lol

Peanuts are easy to grow but not really worthwhile unless you grow lots.
They're like cotton.
Fun to grow, but if ya need a new pair of jeans...

I have, in my raised beds. I forgot about them and then dug up about a double handful of them at year end - but that was a couple of years ago.

Located in Armstrong and offers a wide variety of nuts, baking ingredients, confections, etc. Friends and I place an order, split the cost and divvy up the items accordingly.
