So will the bands have to change their names? Westbank Second Nation? WSN.

LOL. Probably not, since it's unlikely the Solutreans would have come this far west.

But "indigenous" people across Canada call themselves First Nation so where would the line be drawn? Is it not first come first served? Or is it first to complain first to get attention? Could any of the descendants of the Solutrean tell the "First Nations" to get off their land?

My favorite line in the article is:

If the geology, archaeology, and genetics can prove Stanford and Bradley’s theory, the team will rewrite history and alter our perspective on how North America was first populated.

It will be very interesting what happens to the hyperbole of certain groups.

Renamed from aboriginal to unoriginal.

Very interesting. I thought the Ice Bridge idea had been discounted but maybe there's new evidence.

If the first people in North America were from France and Spain, it wouldn't really change anything as long as First Nations people currently living in North America are their descendants. However, if only certain First Nations groups are their descendants, and other groups are descendant from later Asian migrations, that could complicate things. Then you could have a "First Nation, Second Nation, Third Nation" scenario.

If there were two migrations from such distant areas, you would think there would be some pretty distinct genetic differences between the descendants from both groups (or, maybe things would have gotten completely garbled by the introduction of more recent European DNA).

Are you suggesting there was an earlier society living in the westbank area?

I have never believed the Bering Strait Ice bridge theory regarding migration of First Nations into North America. Now we have people walking over a frozen Atlantic Ocean. To what? They would have no clue where they were going? 2,000 miles walking across a frozen Atlantic without food and water? What next? Give your head a shake....

The first people to arrive in Europe were the Celtic people who established the first European civilization called the Hallstad Empire after being driven out of Asia by fellow Scythian (Indo-European) tribes and that was 4,000 years ago. Up to that time no one lived in Europe....all migrations into Europe came from Asia.

Why don't they try and discuss and explore the Phoenician's in North and South America and who's watery Empire spanned the world? Lots of evidence of Phoenician and Hebrew writing through the America's...The Phoenicians traveling and trading the world for 2,400 years before they even needed an army.

No we'll just make up some more fake history and confuse people even more.... :smt045

If you look to the top right side of the Indo-European language tree, you will see the Tocharians! They were a European/Celtic people who lived in the Gobi Desert area in western China 2,500 years ago.....

Locations of Tocharian Mummies in the Gobi desert are located to this day and the ones opened up found mummies with blonde or red hair wearing tartan....check out Cherchan man mummy.

genetic testing should be able to determine if this is true or not. I'm pretty confident no one is making this up

The people working on this haven't theorized the Solutreans intentionally crossed the Atlantic to get to somewhere else.

The theory is that these people were already accustomed to living on the ice and quite capable of getting much of their subsistence from the ocean. It doesn't seem unlikely some of them may have gone on an extended forage, journeying along what was then the "seashore", hunting seals and fishing as they went. They may have done so intentionally (exploring, as people have always done, to find out what's over the horizon) or unintentionally (forced out of their community, cut off while already on a foraging trip, what have you.)

Also, the theory is not that the Solutreans went on to populate the Americas. It's simply that if they did make this excursion, they did so prior to the Bering crossing.

There's interesting DNA work going on to investigate both the Solutrean-Atlantic excursion and the Bering-Pacific migration theories.

It's all very interesting to contemplate.
