More Fake News

Post by d0nb »

Fake news is a big problem. Increasingly, serious citizens look to mainstream media for responsible reportage. When media betrays the public’s trust, it’s scary.

No doubt Barbara intended to write “Increasingly, serious citizens have to look hard to find responsible reportage in the mainstream media.” You’re welcome, Babs. Good story.

I think part of the problem is there are a lot of people that are technically commentators and not Journalists who keep trying to get into the whole news thing. The problem with commentators is they are under no obligation to follow anything resembling journalistic integrity. They can lie make up facts have no sources, total freedom, and unless your digging into the people writing the stuff you read, and are digging down to find the sources for each article you have no idea if what your reading is true.

Be careful and follow this three step process:

1: Google the authors name, and check their wikipedia page to see if they are a journalist.
2: Trace all sources back to their origin. Primary sources or peer reviewed studies only.
3: Don't preclude things you disagree with. We all hate being wrong but it happens and if you only think other people are wrong you will fall prey to fake news.
So much of the violent push-back on everything progressive and reformist comes down to: I can see the future, and in this future I am not the centre of the universe and master of all that I survey, therefore this future must be resisted at all costs.

4. Understand you're not getting the real story by substituting mainstream news with bloggers on Facebook or Twitter

*and if you're having a hard time critically evaluating what you hear from various mainstream news sources a Liberal Arts education might help.

96% is obviously a high number ( more “fake news” from joe? ), but yes – people with critical thinking skills will also be mistrustful of mainstream media. What sets them apart from people who don’t believe the news simply because Trump told them not to is they critically evaluate what they hear and don’t just substitute mainstream news with bloggers on Facebook or Twitter, or just swallow up the tripe promoted from deliberately misleading memes. People with even rudimentary thinking skills would have realized that was the point in the first place. They have some reading comprehension ability.

Fake news and dishonest self-serving politicians are certainly winning it appears. citizens are fighting amongst each other about their party is better than yours and this is why. Instead of us uniting and fighting the whole system together. If we spend our time just blindly telling everyone that will listen that the party you like is the better one you're blinding yourself to the bad things all parties do. It doesn't matter what the name of your party is. They've pretty much all been found to be self-serving. We need to somehow pull together and look at everything in an unbiased fashion and find out what is right and wrong for the good of all of us. Don't focus on the name of the parties. Focus on the person doing their job with deceit and disorder.. it seems anybody with strong political opinions can never see the things wrong that their party does. They just blindly stick up for their party no matter what. But we all know that all politicians do not do the best job for us.
You don't learn when you are talking. You can only learn while you're listening.

Good points have been made. Yes, by all means, go beyond biased news aggregators like Yahoo, Facebook, National Newswatch, Google, etc. Having anything to do with outfits that are in the business of monetizing the personal information of their users and leading those users to news sources favored by their partners in crime is something to be wary of.

Many have placed far too much faith in the integrity and professionalism of the mainstream media. Find your own news.

Familiarize yourself with the biases of the various news organizations and the people who report for them. Study their histories to ascertain whether they were telling the truth when others were simply running with the pack. It doesn’t matter whether the message comes from a source dear to the hearts of “establishment” types, or an unknown blogger in Moose Jaw. What does their track record tell you about them and their ability to intuit the facts?

Just as a cardiac stress test can reveal underlying disease, the election of Trump has been particularly useful in exposing the ugly smugness and intellectual inadequacy of many in the establishment media. It has shown them to be not only incompetent and biased (hardy a well-kept secret) it has made their lack of class, dishonesty and small-minded bigotry apparent to the public as never before.

Perhaps, in time, that will prove to have been a good thing.

Eric Weinstein (no relation to Harvey, but related to his brother Brett) has a very interesting view on how the media creates Fake News. Of course, it's not just the media that creates fake news, and it's not even intentional. Everyone does it to a certain degree because we all have a certain level of bias.

Keep in mind that he's a left of center academic, and a really smart guy. His model moves beyond left and right, and shows how the media (whether right or left) creates fake news about things they don't like or people they don't agree with.

I have been involved in many news making events, more often than not the reports are very inaccurate. Sometimes it's the reporter doing a little story telling, sometimes the people they talk to are mistaken. For the incidents I was involved with, an accurate report was the rarity.

Eric Weinstein’s Four Quadrant Model

Good stuff.

Weinstein is a real work in progress. His affection for the NYT is almost touching. He loves their choice of fonts, the elegance of their prose and that the NYT is so close to being his “ideal newspaper.” I half expect him to wax poetic about the odor it emits as he unfolds it.

No doubt it was painful for him when the illiberal media maligned his brother for the stance he took against institutional racism at “progressive” Evergreen State College. To make things worse, the only major news outlet that was willing to give Bret Weinstein’s story a fair hearing was the evil Fox News. What a bitter pill to have to swallow.

No fan of Donald Trump, “the unclean wrecking ball,” Erik observes that, absent what he calls the “institutionalized corruption” of the Clintons, the DNC, CNN, NPR, the NYT and others, Trump would not have been elected.

It’s always captivating to see the really big brains at work.

Will the voices of the ‘intellectual dark-web’ and the ‘Four Quadrant Model of media narrative control’ he uses to ‘unspin’ the ‘Central Gated Institutional Narrative’ (the liberal MSM) open his mind even more - or will the siren song of the NYT lure him back into the comfortable embrace of illiberal liberal groupthink? Stay tuned.

Increasingly, the real divide is not between people who believe one thing about a subject and people who believe another, but about whether you are the sort of person who even wants to allow a full and frank discussion to go on in the first place. https://life.spectator.co.uk/2018/02/th ... -dark-web/

More fake news, as the right-wing media want to spin the India trip was a disaster, when in fact was huge success with Trudeau inking deals for millions on both sides of the ocean! Trudeau is out doing the nation's business theConservative leader Andrew Scheer is riding around in his clown car, playing beer pong and telling Canadians he was a drug abuser in college! No wonder it took Andrew 2 tries to complete his BA and then went no further. https://www.facebook.com/VCBuzz/videos/2197444476963461/

It was not just the right-wingers who that it was a disaster. The media has been very critical of the trip.
