An Okanagan drawl?

Two UBC professors have embarked on a project to discover if there is a regional accent. The study is dubbed DRAWL for Determining Regional Accents With Literature.

Former Vernon resident and UBC music proffesor Bob Pritchard says he noticed that some of his students pronounced Vancouver with a 'G' sound after the 'N'.

"I had 80 students in my class and I noticed they were all pronouncing it that way, I asked them their hometowns and they were all from the Okanagan," Pritchard said.

I noticed years ago that people growing up IN Vancouver (like myself) pronounced it VaNG-couver and visitors pronounced it VaN-couver.

I currently live in Vancouver and hear it often. More often than not, actually.

I hear it most often from younger people, especially young women. They say it like "Vangceuver?"

It's a fairly recent thing.

Never ever paid any attention to it, but now I'm conscious of it, I do hear it quite a bit.
