Volcanoes

Mnt. Edna awakens!

Red sky at night... Sicily looks on as Mount Etna erupts in spectacular fashion.

The 3,329-metre (10,922-feet) volcano erupted for around an hour yesterday evening, lighting up the Sicilian sky and providing amazing scenery for the village of Milo, just 12 kilometres away.

Krakatoa east of Java erupts!
Cool pictures!

Krakatoa (east of Java) errupts on January 18, 2011 as we sailed within 1/2 mile of the crater on the Merchant Vessel Clipper Oddysey. We watched as the volcano errupted for over 1 hour. It send smoke and ash high into the sky. What a show. Then it suddenly stopped and we continued our expedition.

More on mnt. Etna...

Sicily’s Mount Etna roared back to life for several hours, bombarding its eastern slope with missiles of hot lava.

Columns of ash disrupted air transportation around the Italian island. Ash from the eruption forced Catania’s Fontanarossa airport to shut down overnight.

The year 2010 was an unusually quiet period for Etna, which last produced a major eruption in 1992.

Etna is in an almost constant state of activity, but is not considered particularly dangerous.

Its slopes are home to farms and vineyards that make use of soil made rich by centuries of regular eruptions.

11 quakes recorded at Mt. Bulusan — Phivolcs

At least 11 volcanic quakes were recorded around Bulusan Volcano in Bicol, hours after it spewed ash before dawn Tuesday.

But the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Wednesday thick clouds at the summit prevented visual observation of the crater and thermal vents.

It added no lahar event was reported or observed, but said the volcano's alert status remains at "1," characterized by low-level unrest.

Concern over Mt. Baekdu eruption growing!

A slew of the latest environmental changes revealed by North Korean officials during a meeting with their South Korean counterparts in Munsan, north of Seoul, Tuesday has put greater weight that the dormant volcano on Mt. Baekdu could erupt.

The meeting was organized at the request of the North amid more serious warnings from South Korean scientists that the 2,744-meter volcano on the border between North Korea and China may not remain dormant. It last erupted in 1903.

Thanks Averagejoe: And I might add for those who can't stand inaction for more than 30 seconds, believe me those four volcanoe pix all have exploding lava and ash cloud action and soon, so even though they look dormant give it 20 or so secs.

Wikipedia wrote:Sakurajima's activity became more prominent in 1955, and the volcano has been erupting almost constantly ever since. Thousands of small explosions occur each year, throwing ash to heights of up to a few kilometers above the mountain. The Sakurajima Volcano Observatory was set up in 1960 to monitor these eruptions.
Monitoring of the volcano and predictions of large eruptions are particularly important because of its location in a densely populated area, with the city of Kagoshima's 680,000 residents just a few kilometers from the volcano. The city conducts regular evacuation drills, and a number of shelters have been built where people can take refuge from falling volcanic debris.
In light of the dangers it presents to nearby populations, Sakurajima was designated a Decade Volcano in 1991, identifying it as worthy of particular study as part of the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
Sakurajima is part of the Kirishima-Yaku National Park, and its lava flows are a major tourist attraction. The area around Sakurajima contains several hot spring resorts. One of the main agricultural products of Sakurajima is a huge basketball-sized white radish (sakuradaikon).
On March 10, 2009, Sakurajima erupted, sending debris up to 2 km away. An eruption had been expected following a series of smaller explosions over the weekend. It is not thought there was any damage caused by the latest eruption.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

That explains why the cameras were trained on the volcanoe. I want to add, as if Japan doesn't have enough troubles right now. If that city needs to be evacuated, it's more disaster isn't it?

Still an excellent vid to watch.
