Pet Wheelchair ?

Postby parent123 » Aug 20th, 2018, 6:50 pm

Poor pup - has had a bad back always, over the past few days his back paws now have very little sensation - he can't walk !
Otherwise he is relatively happy and healthy.

He doesn't have a positive prognosis (where is the sad face smily? )

I'm trying to make him comfortable, but he is frustrated that he can't walk. I've seen the wheelers - or wheelchairs, and I would really like to try and see if it works for him.

They can be bought new online, but I think it is possible I won't need it by the time it gets here.

I've called around, and vets and pet stores in Kelowna have no leads (other than the one in Winfield, who suggested i make an appointment with the rehabilitation specialist to develop a plan for him.. still not sure if they actually have the wheelchairs)

Any ideas? Any experience with them?

Anyone know someone that has one they may want to rent? or sell ?

He is a 25 pound bichon. If I could give him some mobility - I think he would be happier.

Thanks a ton!

Google "diy pet wheelchair". If you can make it yourself or know someone who can they have all the plans and videos that shpw you how. :D It probably a lot cheaper too.

I love how those 4 minute videos make things look so easy. I know I can't make it... but I'll ask my more tool-literate friends. Thanks!

Yes, they make it look like a piece of cake. But I can't bake either so I tend to ask handy friends. :smt045

Also, check with some of the dog rescues in the area. maybe they know? I wonder if any of them have been in need of a wheelchair. Never hurts to ask. Critteraid, Paws It Forward, Woofer Rescue Okanagan, Okanagan Small Dog rescue Society are the ones in the Okanagan I know off the top of my head.

Why not just use a baby stroller? I've seen people using them for their pets.

Pets need to move around, walk, have some independence. A pet that is carried everywhere 24/7 has a reduced quality of life. Bless parent123 for trying to give her baby back some freedom.

Thanks very much!
I will try the rescues - I hadn't thought of them. I tried vets, stores, animal hospitals, etc... nothing. I tried to call the SPCA, but keep missing the 4 hour window that they are open to calls.

Just so you know, you can phone the spca between 9-12 and press (I think its) 7 and you will get a person.
If you get a machine just keep trying as they do pick up the phone when they are there and not busy.
