A very handy thing, for those in areas where a fire or another emergency situation may occur:

The emails come very quickly. Bonus points if you have an email client that gives you instant notification on your desktop and/or smartphone.

Great picture on castanet today that illustrates how amazing the firefighters are. Look at the perfect ring of retardant around the fire. So precise....

Was there any fire damage to homes? You'd think the houses by the hwy may have been hit with the bombers?
You can't fix stupid........BUT you can dress them up and over pay them to teach your kids!

Driving into town today at the pull out just before the Heartland (former 8 Mile) Ranch I passed a number of Joe Rich Fire trucks and Fire Members - they all looked pretty tired (and smokey) but there were lots of smiles and waves as I honked my horn and flapped my arm out the window at them. Pretty incredible that these folks are all volunteers! I'm extremely proud of each and every one of them! Along with the Professionals and other Community Fire Teams our Joe Rich Fire Members pulled out all the stops these last few days to ensure that dwellings and structures were saved. When you consider that our first responders here in Joe Rich, (and Big White, Ellison and Lake Country too) are volunteers but they are also our friends, neighbours and some even family members it's pretty unbelievable what they do for all of us. Because they live in our communities, and often know us personally, they are aware of how important what they are protecting means to us on a one to one level. In some instances they might know this is our very first home, or how we might have just lost our job and are doing everything we can to make ends meet or how we have a new baby in our family...the circumstances are endless. My point is that our Joe Rich Fire Department members are an extremely dedicated and well trained team. As the next few days and weeks and months go by and the threats for further fires loom over us their 'jobs' will put them in the 'line of fire' once again. I gain a lot of well being and comfort knowing they are there for all of us. Our communities are extremely lucky to have such great teams of men and women who go far beyond what it takes to be a regular volunteer in our communities.
Thank you Joe Rich Fire Department and First Responders Team... THANK YOU!!!

Has there ever been any fuel mitigation done in the Joe Rich area? I never realized how populated it is until I scrolled over it using Google Earth today. With so many homes nestled in the trees like that you'd think there would be some safety measures in place.

I'm sure homeowners have been diligent. Probably new building permits require it. Still can't protect against idiots throwing butts

Yeah that's a big problem, especially with the highway surrounded by dead grass like that. There should be a fuel break between the highway and the homes above.

Normally I'd be defending smokers but after seeing literally thousands of cigarette butts along a 1km stretch of highway here in kamloops with dry brush a few feet away I changed my mind. The amount of carelessness is unbelievable.
