Where did you get your candidate information?

Where did you get your candidate information?

Postby Darkre » Oct 21st, 2018, 7:18 am

Curious as to where everyone got their information on the platforms for the candidates this year. Not one member of Penticton's council had a website. 2 had a facebook page and 1 had an instagram account. Other than the candidate debates, which I doubt many people watched in full if at all, there was very little information about what each candidate actually stood for. Occasionally a candidate would receive a couple line quote in the paper and of course there were the couple paragraph bio's printed at the beginning of the campaigns but it seems like a comprehensive platform wasn't required this election. It really seems to me that this election was won solely based on name recognition and sound bite quotes.

I'm curious as to where everyone got information on the candidates that they chose to vote for and how did you choose without a full platform available from most of the candidates?

Good question. I noticed the same thing. Most of the councillor candidates put up signs and that was the extent of their campaign.

I spent two or three hours a couple of days before the advance polls started opening and the lack of information directly from the individual candidates struck me as odd too. In this day of social media and instant communication there is little excuse not to take the time to get your word out on the internet, and frankly it counted against those candidates in my research. I wish I been able to attend the live forums, but a nasty case of sciatic inflammation has limited my out-and-about time for the past while. Some local media sites, The Western was one, had published brief bios and platform statements from candidates but again some candidates were conspicuously absent. Lack of effort to get one's campaign into the public eye spoke volumes to me, especially given the number of relatively unknown names on the ballot this year. To me that cast doubt on just how seriously those candidates were taking a council position. In the end I only cast four votes for council members.

I vaguely know John... did some work for him.
He's no nonsense, a bit old school, and a dash of hardass.
I know some folks don't like him because of his brashness.
But frankly, in the 13 years I've been living in the Peach City it's never needed a drill sergeant, no nonsense, hardass, like it does it right here and now. This city needs a kick in the *bleep*.

I agree as well on the lack of information out there by candidates for Mayor and council. I of course voted early to avoid the line ups that weren't there, in line less then 15 minutes on the 19th very well run. I figured there would be a split but not the way it happened, I figured John would get in because of us seniors, I personally don't care for his old time thoughts on running the city, and hope newer council members will help him and help some of the older council members face up and stand up and listen to the citizens of Penticton. I didn't care for Cox's attitude, a bit cocky for my taste and Jake..... well Trio and attitude of his?
So what did it leave, do you know what I liked about all three....... absolutely .. nothing.

Considering the age demographic here, that is not a shocker. Civic elections in smaller communities will continue to face this challenge given the disappearance of local TV and radio news for that matter for probably another generation until everyone has "aged out" and become a slave to the tablet and smart phone.
We might actually be fortunate in the Okanagan with the local rags at least providing a resume of each candidate. At the very least that in itself let's one weed out taxi drivers from School Board Financial officers. Not ideal but it does whittle down the talent pool one has to pick from.
And fluff, like yourself.....I only voted for 4 Councillor positions.

Oh, that's easy. Tiffany’s discotheque, but I was a little loaded at the time and those youngsters from the band Chilliwack were making a lot of noise. I don't think I heard the full platform though. I seem to recall falling off my platform shoes, after they got tangled up in my bell bottoms during a Bee Gees song and I had to leave early because I cracked the mousse holding my afro together.

The next day my neighbour and I discussed things online, pulled tight between two empty soup cans, and we were both of the opinion that Katie must have used a fake Id.

Wow, what a load of immature sour grapes that went into that whine.

Oh yeah, well you'd be the expert, so I'll take your word for it. If you can't get a chuckle from the results of our election then I don't know what you can chuckle at these days. Sour grapes? I don't know, I can't see, what you see - and I'm okay with that.

I'm no expert Drip.....I called it wrong and admit it. You on the other hand want to take your bat and ball home, and call anyone that accepts the voters results as Mr poopy pants.

Oh good grief, I made a cheeky crack about an earlier time. Nothing more. I voted JV last election and I voted for several of the mature candidates that made it in this election. I'm not disappointed or surprised. I suspect, both John and Jake could read that comment for what it was, and not be as wounded over it, as you are.

Poli's don't have best before dates, but thank god the 70's and 80's did.

Oh and PS: If that comment upset you because you felt I was making fun of your corduroy bell bottom pant suit, I wish I could apologize to you for that, but I can't.
