Moving to Summerland?

Post by josh14 »

Hi Everyone.
My family is thinking about moving to Summerland.
Can anyone provide pros and cons of Summerland for families with young children versus Upper Mission in Kelowna? What are the most family friendly Summerland neighborhoods?
Thanks

Personally I would like Summerland for young families. I don't know about upper mission but Kelowna will drive you batty before long with traffic to get to any amenities. Summerland has a pool,( kept too warm for my liking) hockey and soccer programs, Mt biking and seems to be more dog friendly that Kelowna.

Similar to most jurisdictions, local politics can drive you crazy.

Pretty good assortment of very competent trades people.
On another note, if you ride a road bike, stay away from Giants Head road,( among others) the south east side is a pathetic example of road infrastructure.
Not sure about housing costs, perhaps reaching but maybe one gets more house in Summerland for same $$.

I know Kelowna's Upper and Lower Mission very well, and Summerland pretty well.

Summerland is a community. Small town feel, small town charm. Great access to trails and beaches.

Upper Mission and Lower Mission South of Mission Creek sends kids to Chute Lake Elementary, Dorothy Walker, CL Middle then Okanagan Mission Secondary. All good schools. Plenty of trails close at hand and lots of beach access.
Easy access to many amenities, shopping and dining that Summerland does not have.

Contrary to popular Penticton and South Okanagan lore, Kelowna traffic is not bad at all when you live there as you cross the highway and not travel it. The Kelowna traffic that South Okanaganites whine about incessantly when they keep going there to shop, is a non-issue when you live there and don't drive along the highway or cross the bridge at peak times.

If you move to Summerland, be sure to hide anything that might be interpreted as politically incorrect or Mayor Boot will call a media event for a ceremonial burning party in front of your house or business.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Summerland has a lot to offer. Great outdoor activities (parks, trails, beaches ..), good schools, great peaceful place for young families, providing you don't mind commuting to work. There are next to none job opportunities here. There are a couple of grocery stores, a pub, hardware store, and that's pretty much it. Most Summerlanders shop in Penticton, which is about 10-20 min drive, depending on which part of Summerland you are in. West Kelowna is about 25-30 min to the north. Unless you really have to, you would avoid crossing the bridge to Kelowna. So far, Summerland has been spared from usual crime and homelessness problems bigger cites such as Kelowna experience.

Summerland is quiet. It's one of the very few towns in the Okanagan where the highway doesn't blast right down main street so it has managed to keep a small-town feel.

Yup, Summerland is everything as espoused in the few previous posts. It also has a very intolerant Mayor that will stage a protest in front of your taxpaying business if it does not align with her socialist policies.

How is it not on point if a sitting Mayor calls a media event in front of the business of a well established taxpaying business person??
Any clue as to why Toni Boot got the boot in the Prov election?

Yeah, ... that was her nomination ticket, but she/they (count in counc. Doug Holmes as well) can't do too much harm there, as Summerland has a wealthy taxpayer base who know how to pull strings on them.

Not enough to have kept "Kamala Kanada" out of the Mayors seat. Are fruit pickers still around in November when Civic elections happen?

I wouldn't go that harsh on her. She can't do too much damage. And no, there are no fruit pickers around in late October. Not sure how they fit in this picture? :135:

Somehow I suspect she'll only be around until the next municipal election.
