A May Day Tale: Seattle Worker Loves $15 Minimum Wage — Until He Loses His Job

Devin Jeran, an employee at Z Pizza in Seattle, was stoked to get a raise, from $11 to $15 an hour as part of a new law that takes effect today.

He was happy to get a raise, when Seattle’s minimum wage went up to $11 an hour at the beginning of the month.

“I definitely recognize that having more money is important,” he told local TV station Q13-Fox, “especially in a city as expensive as this one.”

But that didn't last long. "Unfortunately, he’ll only enjoy that bigger paycheck for a few more months. In August, his boss is shutting down Z Pizza and putting him and his 11 co-workers out of work," the station reported.

Today, across the country, workers are striking. Some 21,000 AT&T Wireless workers were expected to walk off the job, WZVN reports. And the protests occurred around the world as workers demanded better pay and better working conditions, ABC reported.

But for Jeran, things are going to get worse, RedAlertPolitics reports.

"[Z Pizza] owner Ritu Shah Burnham said she just can’t afford the city’s mandated wage hikes.

“I’ve let one person go since April 1, I’ve cut hours since April 1, I’ve taken them myself because I don’t pay myself,” she told Q13. “I’ve also raised my prices a little bit, there’s no other way to do it.”

The organization that pushed for the higher minimum wage, 15 Now Seattle, wouldn’t comment directly on the closing to Q13 and didn’t offer any sign of sympathy.

“Restaurants open and close all the time, for various reasons,” Director Jess Spear said.

May Day began in the late 19th century, sharing the date with the International Workers' Day, set up by Socialists and Communists. The goal was noble: To secure the eight-hour work day and improve horrific conditions in some factories. But the day has morphed into unions in America demanding ever-increasing wages for workers. That, in turn, has led to a move to raise minimum wages to much higher levels.

But it hasn't helped Jeran.

Jeran wonders about all the rallies that were supposed to be about making life better for people like him.

“If that's the truth, I don't think that's very apparent. People like me are finding themselves in a tougher situation than ever.”

Shah Burnham is concerned about where her employees will end up when she does close.

“I absolutely am terrified for them. I have no idea where they're going to find jobs, because if I’m cutting hours, I imagine everyone is across the board.”

Pizza Restaurant Employee Got His Precious $15/Hour Minimum Wage… And Then Promptly Lost His Job

The only way leftists are ever going to understand how economics work is when they become the victims of their own backwards economic ideas. And even then, I’m still not sure that they quite “get it.”

Case in point.

According to that sourcelink, a pizza restaurant in Seattle called Z Pizza is being forced to close its doors in August because of a new law mandating businesses pay their employees $15/hour. One Z Pizza employee – Devin Jeran – was super-thrilled to be getting a raise from $11 or $15 an hour. And then reality hit like a ton of bricks –

Let’s see… arbitrarily force businesses to pay their employees more than the owners can afford, businesses have to close up… it’s like basic economic principles actually WORK or something.

And it’s not like this is a huge surprise. We’ve seen examples of this happening time after time after time. Whether it’s layoffs or shorter hours or businesses having to close outright, politicians raising minimum wages is hurting companies, owners, and employees. Some of those employees are even the very morons demanding this nonsense.

Like I said, this has happened before and I’m certain we’ll see it happen again. Until the left figures out that forcing businesses to pay employees more than they can afford just makes things worse.

These places are already calling people in for 2 hour shifts. How exactly can hours be cut more than that? Call people in for 10 minutes?

Restaurant CEO, who has actually experience and knowledge in the restaurant industry, says restaurants can't afford to hire people at $15 an hour.

NDP thinks there's another job at a restaurant for $15 an hour, right across the street.

Reasonable people can see the disconnect between pie in the sky and reality.

CEO pay and/or shareholder dividends should be in direct proportion with employee wages.

All additional cost will be passed onto the consumer, that includes increased hourly wages.
Now if sales goes down, that means layoffs.
