Fire near Elk Road, West Kelowna
Firefighters snuffed a wildfire overnight that advanced to within 75 metres of Mission Hill Winery in West Kelowna.
The fire reportedly broke out about 1 a.m. off Elk Road, on Westbank First Nation lands, in the Mount Boucherie area and was determined to have spread from a smouldering burning barrel, says West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund.

Fire managers use a weather model that indicates fire danger, and possible fire behavior if one starts. But there is a simple way you can tell how dire things are.
If in the current weather, or forecasted weather, the value for temperature (Celsius) is higher than the value for relative humidity, the area is in 'crossover' which is considered extremely dangerous. The fine fuels that get fires started are drying like tinder. If it's windy, it's even more dire -- the wind will hasten the drying of fuels and drive the fire when it starts.
Today the central OK is forecast for a high of 35 degrees C and 22% RH -- classic crossover.
