How to check for photo duplicates?

Post by Bsuds »

I am interested in cleaning up my photo files and deleting duplicates. Has anyone done this and if so what programs have you tried and or recommend?

When I'm cleaning up my photo files if I have the same photo in each hand I usually throw one away.

Sorry Bsuds, I couldn't help myself. :138:

Ya it's the same ol problem. Remember when the photo places used to give you 2 of everything? Even the crappy ones!

I have back ups spread over several hard drives and it's turning into a bit of a mess.

SearchMyFiles rates fairly well and for what it's worth CCleaner also has a duplicate file finding option under "tools" albeit with limited perks.

I don't have a good recommendation.

Some advice tho - a photo is just a file. When searching for software look for software that detects duplicate files rather than software that detects duplicate photos. You'll likely have better results finding software that fits your needs.

Yes there are benefits to both types of scanning. I am looking for people who have used a program and have an opinion on which might be better.

Unfortunately Bsuds what I use would not help you, since I don't think they make a Windows version.
If you want to check it called PhotoSweeper

Had to laugh at Barney's response. I'm having the same issue - saved files everywhere and I know it's going to take me forever to eliminate duplicates.

Upload all your photos into Google photos. They can manage duplication etc.

If you do not have a lot of duplicates (or prefer to manually delete the duplicates) and you have Windows, you do not need any additional software.

The steps will vary slightly with each version of Windows:

1) Use the built-in Search/Find function (right from the Windows Start button for most versions) and enter *.jpg in the search box. This will give you a list of all jpg files in all folders.
2) Click "See more results" to open the list in an Explorer Window.
3) Set the View option to Details to see the file names, dates and sizes.
4) Click the Header for the Size column to sort all the files in Ascending or Descending order.
5) Change the View option to Icons.

You now have a sorted list of all your images on your hard drive. Because duplicates will be the same size, they will be right beside each other and you can easily spot the duplicates and delete them manually.

I have 10-20,000 photo's so those 2 options won't work for me. I am trying something on my media computer that I Just put an SSD in and need to move things around anyway. Will see how it turns out.

Just a follow up when I do a copy from one place to another if there are duplicate files Windows does let you know there are duplicates and will overwrite or ignore them. For my purposes it may be the easiest way to go.
