8.3%+ human genome traced to retrovirus infections

Post by Jlabute »

Just an interesting article I wanted to share about virus palaeontology. I’ve recently read recent headlines like “Borna virus spread to humans”
https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/692016/borna-virus-outbreak-germany-european-union-united-kingdom-disease-prevention
but numerous viruses have been with us for 10’s of millions of years and have gradually worked their way into our DNA. Borna virus in the avian world causes a condition called PDD in parrots. The cause of death is PDD which is really just a symptom of an active viral infection. It is like HIV causes AIDS, Borna causes PDD in birds. It is just as political as well since it is hardly understood and no one wants to have a pet bird implicated with this disease. Some experts say 30% of all birds may have Borna virus. Some articles say 30% of humans have Borna virus. The field of study is becoming very interesting.
