Internet 300: Shaw vs Telus

Post by mattinkelowna »

Both companies are now advertising speeds of 300mbps, bringing us closer to the 1000 mbps offered by Bell and Rogers.

Which one is better, Shaw or Telus?

Do either Rogers or Bell provide internet in Kelowna.
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

On a quick search all I can find is wireless for both of them in Kelowna.

My preference is Telus.

Does anyone have any experience with "satellite internet"?

For those areas that don't have telephone or cable services......

I'm very happy with my current provider.
So that 1 gig Internet speed is most likely only in GTA.

It looks like Bell offers wireless Internet in Kelowna (using cellphone towers):

Satellite is totally different from wireless. Bell used to offer it but I don't know if they still do and you needed a landline for it to work.

I'm curious what people with these 300MBs packages are doing that requires so much bandwidth. The average household wouldn't notice much of a difference between 30 and 300MBs.

For satellite, you don't need a landline but there is a Fair Access Policy which takes your throughput to zero when you've hit the limit and the service is very high latency - radio waves only goes so fast and it's a 70,000 km round trip to the Satellite (i.e. from your home to the satellite and back) PLUS you need to add in the roughly 35,000 KM latency from the earth station to the satellite. So, every request you make over Satellite internet requires about 115,000 KM in the air.

You are correct that satellite is different from fixed wireless. Totally off-topic; however.

Which one is better, Shaw or Telus?

What criteria do you use to determine "better"?

Okay, another question.

How fast is internet over copper wire? It's been a long time since I have had it.

Why would I need the high speed internet ? I don't play games and most of what I do is text based or Youtubes.

Is it just me or anything over 20Mbps seems unnecessary?

That is sorta where I was heading with my questions.
