Scanning slides to .jpg.

Post by alanjh595 »

I have several hundred old family photos that are on slides. I am looking to have them scanned and transferred to a computer format (any *.format) that I can copy to CD or a thumb drive.

Does anyone know where I can have this done and the cost?

I believe London Drugs photo department could be of assistance, don't know $$$

London Drugs is a good suggestion. I've also heard that Costco offers a similar service.

Check out what the cost is and then look at doing it yourself. You can buy a converter from Amazon for as low as $70

This works

I found the editing was better if I just scanned everything then used a photo editor. The one the device has is basic and I was not pleased with the results. Sure looked better scanning the negatives than the photos. Much much better.

I have an Epson V550 that came with holders for slides and negatives.
Not sure that exact model is still available, but there are many out there like it.
The bundled software will allow you to save in many formats.
Then you can edit in any way you want with your favorite image editing software.
Not much over $100 and you will save more than that doing it yourself.

I really like the people at LD, but if you have the time you will save money.
If not enough time - LD is a great option.
There are many that advertise online to do this also.
No links from me as I have not used any so can't vouch for them.

If I did not have all my own ‘stuff’ I’d probably go with LD and their box that you Pick up, fill, and drop off. Then, Out of that, anything to be printed larger than 5x7, I’d take to someone with a DSLR and all the right equipment.

I built myself a tube with a camera mount at one end and a slide holder at the other. It was long enough that I could focus my camera on the slide. Held it up to a light source (Outside Daylight worked the best) and took photos of my slides.

Much faster than scanning and they actually turned out not too bad.

My oldest in 1977.
