New Alloy To Store Renewable Energy And Other Advances

Postby indianlarry66 » Sep 8th, 2020, 4:45 pm

The patented Miscibility Gaps Alloy (MGA), developed over several years by the University of Newcastle, is being brought to market by MGA Technology.

Professor at the university, materials scientist and lead researcher, Erich Kisi, said the innovation will enable renewable energy to be used as reliable baseload power, a challenge that proponents of renewable energy have faced for decades

Unlike coal-fired power, which is regulated and controlled, renewable energy was a challenge because it is less predictable and inconsistent.

"We've made renewable energy compatible at grid-scale so that when the sun doesn't shine, or the wind drops the grid still delivers power on demand," Professor Kisi said.

MGA Thermal will begin producing commercial quantities of its bricks in New South Wales in coming months, using close to $1 million from a Sydney venture capital firm and an Australian Government grant.

"The initial demonstration on a solar tower is planned for later this year," Professor Kisi said.

"China’s largest solar-plus-storage project has been connected to the grid. How big is it — 500 megawatts (MW)? 700 MW? 1,100 MW? Nope, we’re in 2020 — it’s 2,200 MW (2.2 GW)."

For comparison Site C will be able to supply continuous power. Also that 2.2GW is peak with bright sunlight. Cloudy days, monsoons, snow etc will make it far far less. And ZERO power generated at night. Big fat ZERO.
Why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

Also, my cheque for having to listen to eco news is on the way.
Not holding my breath on either as it will not happen. [icon_lol2.gif]

^^

This excerpt is from your link........

Some areas of America are more amenable to solar power than others but there are few places better situated to take advantage of solar energy than New Mexico and Arizona.

California and Texas would also have good results, and what do all those areas have in common? Well from Albuquerque New Mexico to the equator is around 2400 miles +/- with the other southern states in that same general ballpark.

By comparison Kelowna is 3447 miles +/- and we are in the southernmost part of BC. Take Coal River which is in the far northernmost part of BC and the distance changes to 4480 miles +/- from the equator so approximately 2000 miles further north.

In order for solar to be functioning at peak performance you need the sun, and the closer to the equator the better it is.

Those southern states don't experience harsh winters as we do in BC, nor do they have months that correspond to our November and December when it's not unusual to get socked in by cloud for a stretch.

They also don't have a mountainous geography to the extent that we do in BC.

I have yet to see any major solar projects within British Columbia, that get bragged about due to their success.

Finally after looking at the pictures of the solar panel farms in the link, the main thought that springs to my mind is how nasty some members got, endlessly pointing at how much farmland Site C was flooding. Some going so far as to suggest we are going to lose half our food production capabilities, when upon closer inspection the truth is most of the land is at best marginal, insofar as agriculture is concerned. We also won't be looking at famine as a few implied.

I can't for the life of me understand how they can be so vehemently opposed to hydro generation, when the flooded areas actually can serve a very useful purpose for recreation such as fishing, where by contrast the land all those solar panels sit on is completely lost. You can't do anything on it for starters, and then add in the fact we simply don't have the luxury of thousands of acres of relatively flat desert land to plant solar panels on. I also wonder what the impact of all those solar panels is on wildlife, though I suppose rattlesnakes probably see them as a great place to sun themselves. [icon_lol2.gif]

So in essence the pro solar zealots have no problem permanently losing flat land, that in many instances in BC actually is good farm land, but oh my goodness dare to flood some marginal land, in the process creating a lake that might well provide some business opportunity in the recreational sector, and these same people go ballistic. :135:

Certainly causes a person to go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

It is now possible to make a wind turbine smart enough to detect birds close by and stop the blades from impacting into the birds .

it is expensive now as its early stages of development , but with time and more adoption i can see the price coming way down .
